In the first quarter of 2016, Americans bought 19.7 million fitness wearables, an increase of 67 percent over the previous year. By 2020, the global market for fitness-focused apps and devices is expected to grow to $30 billion. This means that more than ever, we’re looking at our wrists not only to check the time but also to see how much we’ve moved, monitor our heart rate, and see how we’re stacking up against yesterday’s tallies. As a result of our fitness tech addiction, we’ve lost awareness of what we’re doing, how we’re feeling, and what’s going on around us. This is bad enough in the gym, but when we get outside, the constant checking of a tiny screen truly wreaks havoc, downgrading what should be a rich experience into yet another task we need to complete to meet our daily goals. And if we fall short, we feel inadequate. There’s also the issue of data inaccuracy, with many device makers now admitting that their gadgets provide only estimates. So why do we continue to obsess over data and treat it as gospel truth? It’s time to stop, take a breath, and hit the reset button in a big way.Unplugged provides a blueprint for using technology to meet your health and performance goals in a much smarter way, while reconnecting to your instincts and the natural world. In addition to sharing the performance expertise of Brian Mackenzie and the scientific insight of Dr. Andy Galpin, Unplugged features exclusive stories and advice from elite athletes and world-renowned experts like Laird Hamilton, Tim Ferriss, Kai Lenny, Kelly Starrett, Steven Kotler, Erin Cafaro, Lenny Wiersma, Dr. Frank Merritt, and Brandon Rager. Reading Unplugged will enable you to• Understand both the value and the limitations of technology in athletic performance, fitness, health, and lifestyle situations• Know how and when to utilize physical activity technologies in your everyday life—and when not to• Avoid the common mistakes that most people make with wearables and tracking apps• Understand which technologies and tests are most effective and which are a waste of money• End your addiction to fitness technology and start utilizing it as a tool for cueing, learning, and sensing instead of as a taskmaster that stresses you out• Improve self-awareness and increase self-reliance• Re-engage with nature by spending less time indoors and more time outside• Rediscover the value of coaches’ expertise, curation, and intuition, which technology can’t replace• Take back control of your health, fitness, and performance with the Unplugged training protocol

I love breakup songs and it has been a mission of mine toto write a poem or lyrics that are at least close to some of the greats.Jim Webb has written some of my favourites, he nailed it and obviously went through a painful break up. Do What You Gotta Do by Nina Simone or by the Four Tops. Requiem, Didn’t We and MacArthur Park all by Richard Harris are 3 of his greats. My favourite breakup song is the acoustic version of No Regrets by Tom Rush. It hurts in the right places. The Walker Brothers also do a fabulous take on this great song. Another great breakup song is To Love Somebody by the Bee Gees with an excellent cover by the fabulous Nina Simone.Did I get close to these magical songs, I don’t know, but I tried. There is, for who are happy in the pain of break up, lots of songs and poetry. A lot of pain, guilt, and longing for you to enjoy and indulge.

This is my 14th book of poetry and songs? It really is more of the same, a potpourri of subjects from love and breakup to war and humor.Sometimes I can get inspiration from watching a movie or something on the news. It only takes maybe one line to give me an idea. To me it’s all about the idea. Everything else just falls into place.I feel much happier on the dark side and usually head in that direction. But it is not all doom and gloom. I am really a happy sort of guy. Honest.

I thought I had slowed down a bit. In between my last book and when I better start thinking about the next book. I put the new stuff I had written, you might say in a holding area, like sheep in a pen.I could not belief there were over 30 new ones. Where did they come from? Did I write them? I don’t always know where they come from. But who cares, it’s all good, I think. I suppose deep down it’s what happing now and how I feel at the time. The booze always is an influence; I might hear something or talk with someone, and it gives that little spark that sets me off.I believe my style is changing, but I still try and think in terms of songs when I write. It's so nice to have been part of the Desert Life’s debut album, most of my poems have been the inspiration for Chris’s fabulous songs. This is a bumper issue double my usual 100 entries.

War, why do we have war, what does it achieve? Death and destruction, pain and suffering. Sometimes there is no choice but to go to war when your freedom is at risk. Violence, aggression with weapons designed to kill and destroy.Weapons have advanced that in the event of a nuclear war, it could end civilisation as we know it. Let us hope that day never comes. Can we dream that the time will come when war ceases to exist? We can dream. This is a selection of poems of my thoughts, all relating in some way to war and how it affects us.

Since I have retired I have written more than 1,000 poems. I could not believe I've written more than 60 poems relating to my home town Inverness, in Scotland. I decided to compile them all together and make up a small book.I was brought up in the shadow of that beautiful hill Tommnahuich. At lot of these poems have that beautiful mysterious hillas a reference point.A lot of the poems deal with the nostalgia that you have when you leave Inverness. It never leaves you.

I kind of fell into doing poetry. I wrote every week for a blog called Tune Doctor. I gave a song and wrote a story what that song reminded me of. One day I wrote a poem and a few weeks later another. Ever since then I have become quite prolific. I have lost count how many poems I have written over the past few years, but it must be approaching 1000. I have published many books. I can’t remember exactly how many. Quite a few poems have appeared in various anthologies. Some of my poems have been adapted for songs by Desert LifeThey were all self-published and were done mainly for my kids and friends. I did try to find a Publisher, but it is a hard game. However, I was lucky enough to be accepted by Wordcatcher Publications. This was a small company and was very friendly. I had 4 books released when Covid came along and because of pressures the company folded.I have to say it was quite a relief not to have the pressure of trying to make sales, I always felt I had to justify myself. The four titles are now not available for sale, so I have done a ‘Best Of’ compilation for self-publication.I will make it as cheap as I can as I don’t think it will make my fortune, but hey, you never know

These painted ladies have always been there, they never went away. Never in black or white, always reds, blues, greens and pinks. Painted ladies came on through. The cover painting is another by my talented sister Rose. The poems never change. There is no end to the inspiration given by life. No subject is off limits. I tend to lean towards the dark side and for some reason feel more comfortable there. But there is always hope, there is always light. There is always something new.

Alcohol, I have had a love hate relationship with the stuff for well over 50 years. I have enjoyed it most of the time and most things like going on holiday, weekends were an excuse to drink. Win or lose was another excuse.I know I have drunk too much all my life and have gotten into many situations, but I keep on drinking the stuff. I lost my young sister Carole because of alcohol. My older sister was alcoholic but with the help of AA she gave up and has not drunk for over 30 years. I respect that and am immensely proud of my sister Rose. My father was alcoholic, and I guess I am too. Do I want to stop, yes and no, I keep trying, but the Dark Angel always seems to win.

This is my second book of new poetry this year, I keep saying that I will slow down and give it a rest for a while. But the ideas keep coming. Putin has been a source of inspiration, with his horrible, evil war in the Ukraine. It is hard not to be affected by it.It's the same old stuff, love, breakup, pain, loss and occasionally humour just to let you know that I am not always miserable.I am really a happy sort of guy and see the funny side to life, whenever I can.The book title is based on the beautiful pic I have used on the front cover, it was taken by my brother in law, Mike Hurry. This is the 6th pic of Mike’s I have used, and I must thank Mike for taking such great photos and allowing me to use them. The picture was taken in the Islands in Inverness. One of my favourite places and where the ashes of my dear sister Carole were spread.

My sister Rose and my daughter Kristelle always complain about the dark nature of my poems. I must agree. I do tend to drift to the dark side. (I only tell it how it is). I really am a positive person and never stay down for very long, I always see the funny side of life and like nothing better than a good old laugh.I decided I would do something about it, and I went over all my old poems and was pretty much amazed that I found about 90 positive poems, mostly about love and hope. So here they are, no negativity. All about love. My romantic, loving side. Mister lover man.The inspiration for the title came from my Granddaughter Ripley. She was given a rose by a flower seller, and she named the rose Barry. I loved that, it deserved a poem and I have used it as the title of my book of love.‘You romantic, my ass’

I completed this on the 27/07/2018. All songs / poems have be completed between April and July 2018. They just keep coming. I am going to try and slow down but I will just go with the flow. ABOUT THE AUTHOR I was born in Inverness in 1949 and have lived in East Kilbride, London (near Heathrow), and Saudi Arabia (for ten years). I am now retired and have lived in Spain for the past nine years. I love music especially Dylan, Van, Bruce, The Smiths, Joy Division, The Clash ..….. but I really love it all and still get a thrill when I hear something new. I started to write poems and songs after retiral and have become quite prolific. Many are about the dark side of love, but there are also lighter scribblings. I suppose I have been influenced by all the rock poets, but with a hint of Rabbie, and, I would like to think, a little Wordsworth. I would classify my poems/songs as street 'fire' poetry; that should just about cover it.

What the hell happened?. One day I was sitting in the sun enjoying a cool pint of San Miguel, the next day in full lockdown. It came like a hurricane, destroying all our lives. Stealing loved ones, stealing our time away. Corona Virus you thief. Here are the poems and songs I wrote deadicated to my thoughts and experiences during the Lockdown.

This is my sixth collection of mainly poetry with a few songs. The subject matter is really anything that comes my way. I have a leaning toards the the dark side, for some reason I feel more comfortable there.Break-up, depression, darkness, the light, love, war, humour it is all here.

Happiness, pain, breakup, lies, lust and laughter. This collection tackles the ups and downs of relationships including the darkness and depression that is seldom spoken of. Mackenzie addresses the despair, isolation and loss experienced during break ups.But it isn’t all doom and gloom, with the lows come the highs and humour to keep us going. Many of the poems marvel at the uplift and liberation of new or passionate love.Tangled Light contains poems and songs about the vast spectrum of love that we can all relate to.

I love Tamla Motown music and always listened to the rare soul tracks which became Northern Soul out of Wigan Casino and other Northern venues. I don't know why, but it always reminded me of Tomnahurich Cemetery (the hill of fairies; the ones with wings) in Inverness. I lived under its shadow for my first twenty years and have always been in awe (or even a little scared) of that glorious hill. Some say it is the most beautiful cemetery in the world. It is certainly mysterious and I am sure many ghosts wander its grounds every night. I think of all the souls buried there. What did they do in their lives? What are their stories? I just had to write something. If you have read my previous books you will know what to expect. Anything. Love, break-up, loss, depression, war, happiness, humour, dogs, and memories. It's all here.

They grow in the dark, deep in the forest, so many varieties, some beautiful in colour. Some can bend your mind, some you can eat, some are toxic or poisonous. So much variety. This is my new collection of poems and songs, a collection of mushrooms that have suddenly sprung up. If you have read my previous collections you will know what to expect. Anything. Love, break-up, loss, depression, war, happiness, humour, dogs, corona virus and memories. It's all here. What do you call a group of mushrooms? A troop of course.
