After studying modern languages at Oxford University, Michael Swan spent many years as an English language teacher, and subsequently as a writer of English-teaching and reference materials. His many well-known books in this field, published by Oxford and Cambridge University Presses, are used by students and teachers world-wide. Michael Swan is also widely-published and well-respected poet, and has won a number of prizes for his work. Two collections of his poetry have been published in Britain to critical acclaim, and a number of his poems have appeared in translation in Romanian literary journals. He translates poetry himself from several languages, and has twice won prestigious awards for his translation from Rilke. Michael lives with his wife (an Oxford University lecturer who is also his co-author) in an old house near Oxford. They have two grown-up children: their son is a martial arts specialist, and their daughter is an British army officer. As a pacifist (more or less), Michael finds this confusing, but takes no responsibility for any of it.
