Pyotr Demianovich Ouspenskii (known in English as Peter D. Ouspensky, Пётр Демья́нович Успе́нский; was a Russian mathematician and esotericist known for his expositions of the early work of the Greek-Armenian teacher of esoteric doctrine George Gurdjieff, whom he met in Moscow in 1915. He was associated with the ideas and practices originating with Gurdjieff from then on. He shared the (Gurdjieff) "system" for 25 years in England and the United States, having separated from Gurdjieff in 1924 personally, for reasons he explains in the last chapter of his book In Search of the Miraculous. All in all, Ouspensky studied the Gurdjieff system directly under Gurdjieff's own supervision for a period of ten years, from 1915 to 1924. His book In Search of the Miraculous is a recounting of what he learned from Gurdjieff during those years. While lecturing in London in 1924, he announced that he would continue independently the way he had begun in 1921. Some, including his close pupil Rodney Collin, say that he finally gave up the system in 1947, just before his death, but his own recorded words on the subject ("A Record of Meetings", published posthumously) do not clearly endorse this judgement, nor does Ouspensky's emphasis on "you must make a new beginning" after confessing "I've left the system".
2012 Reprint of 1947 Edition. Exact facsimile of the original edition, not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. "The Strange Life of Ivan Osokin" is a novel by P. D. Ouspensky. It follows the unsuccessful struggle of Ivan Osokin to correct his mistakes when given a chance to relive his past. The conclusion fully anticipates the Fourth Way Philosophy which typified Ouspensky's later works, in particular the final chapter's description of the shocking realization of the mechanical nature of existence, its consequences, and the need to work in an esoteric school.
A new edition of the groundbreaking spiritual treasure, with a foreword by bestselling author Marianne Williamson .Since its original publication in 1949, In Search of the Miraculous has been hailed as the most valuable and reliable documentation of G. I. Gurdjieff's thoughts and universal view. This historic and influential work is considered by many to be a primer of mystical thought as expressed through the Work, a combination of Eastern philosophies that had for centuries been passed on orally from teacher to student. Gurdjieff's goal, to introduce the Work to the West, attracted many students, among them Ouspensky, an established mathematician, journalist, and, with the publication of In Search of the Miraculous, an eloquent and persuasive proselyte.Ouspensky describes Gurdjieff's teachings in fascinating and accessible detail, providing what has proven to be a stellar introduction to the universal view of both student and teacher. It goes without saying that In Search of the Miraculous has inspired great thinkers and writers of ensuing spiritual movements, including Marianne Williamson, the highly acclaimed author of A Return to Love and Illuminata. In a new and never-before-published foreword, Williamson shares the influence of Ouspensky's book and Gurdjieff's teachings on the New Thought movement and her own life, providing a contemporary look at an already timeless classic.

A guide for those who seek a true way of inner growth. The Fourth Way is one of the most comprehensive texts published of the ideas taught by the late P.D. Ouspensky. Consisting of verbatim records of his oral teaching from 1921 to 1946, it gives a lucid explanation of the practical side of G. I. Gurdjieff's teachings, which Gurdjieff presented in the form of raw materials, Ouspensky's specific task having been to put them together as a systematic whole. Just as Tertium Organum deals with a new mode of thinking, so The Fourth Way is concerned with a new way of living. It shows a way of inner development to be followed under the ordinary conditions of life -- as distinct from the three traditional ways that call for retirement from the those of the fakir, the monk, and the yogi.
Ouspensky's believed "Tertium Organum" was the third major philosophical synthesis, the previous being those of Aristotle and Bacon. With the publication of "Tertium Organum" in Russian, in 1912, Ouspensky became a widely respected author and lecturer on metaphysical questions. The American translation of Tertium Organum in 1922, won him widespread recognition in England, where he lived from 1921, and in America.Ouspensky’s experimental efforts to enter higher states of consciousness proved to him that an entirely new mode of thought was needed by modern man, qualitatively different from the two modes (classical and positivistic) that have dominated Western civilisation for 2000 years. "Tertium Organum" is a clarion call for such thought, ranging brilliantly over the teachings of Eastern and Western mysticism, sacred art and the theories of modern science.
Along with Aleister Crowley, Madame Blavatsky, and George Gurdjieff, P. D. Ouspensky (1878 –1947) was one of the most important and influential figures in the occult movements of the twentieth century. With such books as The Fourth Dimension (incorporated in this present volume), Tertium Organum , In Search of the Miraculous , and The Psychology of Man's Possible Evolution , he earned a loyal following among those seeking a deeper knowledge of themselves and their lives, and of the meaning of human existence. In the present book, Ouspensky analyzes certain older schools of thought, of both East and West, connects them with modern ideas and explains them in the light of twentieth-century discovery and speculations in physics and philosophy. In the process he explores relativity, the fourth dimension, Christian symbolism, the tarot, yoga, dreams, hypnotism, eternal recurrence, and various psychological theories. The book closes with an examination of the role of sex in the evolution of man toward superman. Anyone interested in the occult, mysticism and the relationship of those elements to scientific developments in the modern world will find much to ponder in these stimulating, thought-provoking pages.
Introduced and edited by J. G. Bennett. The two stories in this book, "The Inventor" and "The Benevolent Devil," were written just before Ouspensky met Gurdjieff and just after he had returned from the East, "in search of the miraculous." They examine the whole question of conscious evil and the view that humanity's chief error is believing that the material world is the only reality.

Along with Aleister Crowley, Madame Blavatsky and George Gurdjieff, P. D. Ouspensky (1878-1947) was one of the most important and influential figures in the occult movement of the twentieth century. His book on the Tarot has remained practically unknown since its initial publication in Russia in 1913. Yet, it is an important work presenting a general introduction and Ouspensky’s insights on the 22 cards of the Greater Arcana. The cards are presented in pairs, each completing the sense of another. 22 cards from the Waite set, described by Ouspensky, have been produced in full color on the covers.Unabridged, corrected republication of the original (1913) edition.
The five essays in this collection are based on P. D. Ouspensky’s talks and answers to questions, transcribed at private meetings in England and the United States from 1931 to 1946. They bring contemporary readers the wisdom of Gurdjieff as interpreted and refined by a spiritual master in his own right. Topics include “Memory,” “Surface Personality,” “Self-Will,” “Negative Emotions,” and “Notes on Work.” These essays argue persuasively that direct observation of self is the key to awakening from the "waking sleep" that characterizes life for so many.
The Fourth Dimension is a philosophical and mathematical exploration of the concept of time and the existence of higher dimensions beyond our three-dimensional world. Written by P.D. Ouspensky, a student of the renowned mystic G.I. Gurdjieff, the book delves into the nature of reality and the limitations of human perception. Ouspensky uses mathematical and geometric principles to explain the idea of a fourth dimension, and how it might be experienced through altered states of consciousness. He also explores the implications of this concept for our understanding of the universe and our place within it.

THIS BOOK IS IN SPANISH.
These lectures were intended by Ouspensky as introductory material for people interested in the work in England. This material is still unmatched as a brief statement of the work's psychological ideas.Designed to be read aloud at weekly meetings of small groups of people interested in the work, they are almost a basic primer of Gurdjieff's psychological ideas on consciousness and spiritual development. They were constantly revised as new groups came into existence and took their final form only after Ouspensky moved from London to New York, where he continued to teach from 1941 to 1947. The psychology Ouspensky sets forth in these introductory lectures has existed in one form or another for thousands of years and, unlike modern psychology, studies man from the point of view of what he may become. Once a man realizes how little control he has over his reactions to external circumstances and internal stimuli, he may wish to find a way to become free of this mechanical way of living. Ouspensky describes how a man must work simultaneously on his knowledge and his being to find inner unity and why although his development depends on his own efforts, this is very difficult to achieve without guidance from a school.

Born in Moscow in 1878, Peter Demianovich Ouspensky was a precocious scholar who rejected the chance of academic advancement to travel and write. Ouspensky drew a distinction between commonplace knowledge and what he termed 'important knowledge' the acquisition of which he considered the chief aim of life. Driven by this desire he read avidly, and travelled widely throughout Asia and the Middle East. Ouspensky's own attempts to reach higher states of consciousness convinced him that a third instrument of thought was necessary to liberate humanity from the classical and positivistic modes of thinking that dominated western society (the 'Organon' of Aristotle and the 'Novum Organum' of Bacon). First published in 1922, 'Tertium Organum' ranges brilliantly over a wide swathe of subjects, from Western science through sacred art and symbology to the mysticism of both East and West. Widely regarded as a masterpiece, the work proved an immediate bestseller and established Ouspensky as a major contributor to Twentieth century thought. A fascinating and important book for all those interested in this life's 'important knowledge'.
