There has never been another case in Britain quite like that of Frank Crouch and Ernest Pike, and yet the truth behind their story remained untold. As the cover up which occurred in 1913 has been successful for a century, the two men have inevitably been remembered – if at all – only for the manner of their deaths. The contributory factors and personalities just happened to converge in a little community in Salisbury Plain, but events could have occurred anywhere in Britain, so to understand what made men act as they did, it is necessary to look beyond the local horizon. This extends the narrative, which won’t interest everybody, but each individual reader can, without disadvantage, easily skip those chapters they consider superfluous. There is no imagined dialogue. All quotations are as reported at the time.
