Dick Malcolm has been forcibly retired as a research scientist. He and his wife, Joan, accept this and move from the north to the sunshine of Florida, where Dick takes up his new career - a technical writer. He also tries hard to write short stories but fails to excite any publisher. One day, about a month after he experiences a terrifying nightmare, he is inspired and writes a brilliant short story which wins a first prize in a competition. This story comes to the attention of the Police Department in Duluth, MN, where they recognize that it accurately describes an apparent suicide which is still an open case on their books. David Springer, the detective in charge, investigates and is convinced that Dick could not possibly have had anything to do with this still suspicious suicide. He contacts Dick and invites him and Joan to Duluth. This visit initiates a renewed investigation when Dick reveals - under hypnosis - that he knows a great deal more than he realized about the victim. These revelations eventually lead to the arrest of the persons who drove the victim to his suicide.
