Vincent Persichetti

One of the most important books on contemporary music in the twentieth century. Here for the first time is an orderly presentation of the harmonic procedures to be found in music of the first half of the twentieth-century. The author examines the nature of intervals in various contexts, discusses the modes and other scales employed in modern music, describes the formation and uses of chords by thirds, by fourths, and by seconds, of added-note chords and polychords; he deals with different types of harmonic motion, with harmonic rhythm and dynamic sand ornamentation, with harmonic behavior in tonality, polytonality, atonality and serial composition.

The fourth of Persichettis 13 works for band is his elegant monument of the literature, Symphony No. 6, which the composer included among his numbered symphonies (all the others being for orchestra). Cast in the traditional 4-movement structure, Persichettis symphony was among the first major serious concert works composed for wind ensemble, and it still occupies that role as a cornerstone of the literature. The present edition is an 11x14 conductor-size replica of standard score included in the complete set.

Persichetti's, Op. 102 was composed in 1965, after he had already cemented his role as an important composer of band repertoire with Divertimento for Band, Pageant for Band, Psalm for Band, and his great Symphony for Band. Chad Nicholson writes in Great Music for Wind Band (Meredith Music Publications), "Masquerade for Band is a unique contribution to wind repertoire that illustrates depth and sophistication in the context of a simple theme and variation structure. The composer sought to integrate several examples from his theory textbook, Twenthieth Century Harmony, into a complete composition. The resulting piece reflects Persichetti's mannerisms, including copious rhythmic play, modal melodic structures, abrupt shifts in color, and idiomatic wind band scoring."
