Thomas Babington Macaulay, 1st Baron Macaulay PC was an English poet, historian and Whig politician. He wrote extensively as an essayist and reviewer, and on British history. He also held political office as Secretary at War between 1839 and 1841 and Paymaster-General between 1846 and 1848. As a young man he composed the ballads Ivry and The Armada, which he later included as part of Lays of Ancient Rome, a series of very popular ballads about heroic episodes in Roman history which he composed in India and published in 1842. During the 1840s he began work on his most famous work, The History of England from the Accession of James the Second, publishing the first two volumes in 1848. At first, he had planned to bring his history down to the reign of George III. After publication of his first two volumes, his hope was to complete his work with the death of Queen Anne in 1714. The third and fourth volumes, bringing the history to the Peace of Ryswick, were published in 1855. However, at his death in 1859, he was working on the fifth volume. This, bringing the History down to the death of William III, was prepared for publication by his sister, Lady Trevelyan, after his death.
Thomas Babington Macaulay (1800-1859) won instantaneous and outstanding success in prose poetry, in politics and oratory. His History, translated throughout Europe and achieving sales in America second only to the Bible, immediately became the canon of historical orthodoxy, replacing previous histories so completely that it is now difficult to see past its long and apparently effortless triumph.
That what is called the history of the Kings and early Consuls of Rome is to a great extent fabulous, few scholars have, since the time of Beaufort, ventured to deny, boldly ventures the preface.

Perhaps the most famous example of the "Whig interpretation of history"-the idea that the human story has been inevitably destined for enlightenment, progress, and scientific truth-this five-volume work instantly revolutionized the British understanding of history when its first volume was published in 1848. Though not without its detractors-Karl Marx called author BARON THOMAS BABINGTON MACAULAY (1800-1859), an English politician and historian, "a systematic falsifier of history"-it nevertheless became a standard text, and one that is today required reading for anyone who wishes to explore changing values and ideals in historical scholarship. Volume II explores the foreign and domestic policies of James II; the "aboriginal peasantry" and the "aboriginal aristocracy"; William, Prince of Orange; the influence of Oxford University on London; the English revolution of 1647-49; and more.

Excerpt from Critical and Historical EssaysTo make the past present, to bring the distant near, to place us in the society Of a great man or on the eminence which overlooks the field of a mighty battle, to invest with the reality Of human ?esh and blood beings whom we are too much inclined to consider as personified qualities in an allegory, to call up our ancestors before us with all their peculiarities of language, manners, and garb, to show us over their houses, to seat us at their tables, to rummage their Old-fashioned ward robes, to explain the uses Of their ponderous furniture, these parts Of the duty which properly belongs to the historian have been appropriated by the historical novelist On the other hand, to extract the philosophy of history, to direct our judgment of events and men, to trace the connection Of causes and effects, and to draw from the occurrences of former times general lessons of moral and political wisdom, has become the business of a distinct class of writers.

A collection of essays and other shorter pieces covering English history from the accession of Henry VII in 1485 to the death of Charles II in 1685. It serves as a preface to Macaulay's massive five-volume History of England, which, of course, is no such thing but a study of the period from the accession of James II to the death of William III. This collection, while not a connected and coherent whole, does illustrate nicely the brilliance of Macaulay's style and the keenness of his insights and gets the reader prepared for the much larger and more detailed work that is to follow.
This antique book is a collection of critical and historical essays by Lord Macaulay. Included are works from ancient Rome.

Warren Hastings (1732-1818) was Britain's first Governor-General of India, from 1773 to 1785. Accused of corruption, and impeached in 1787, he was eventually acquitted. This 1843 essay takes a critical look at Hastings' life, with this assessment: "Blemished though they were by great crimes, Hastings' public services were immense."
A stirring teacher of Roman history, and of the virtues of courage, sacrifice, and determination.
