A candid account of one of America's most provocative filmmakers that belongs on the shelf of any serious movie lover. Spike Lee tells the cinematic story of the preeminent director, whose pioneering films―from Do The Right Thing, Jungle Fever , and Malcolm X to 25th Hour , Bamboozled , and The Inside Man ―helped transform the face of late twentieth-century America. With unprecedented access to the Lee family and new interviews with stars and celebrities―including Denzel Washington, Halle Berry, Rosie Perez, Adrien Brody, John Turturro, and many others―film critic Kaleem Aftab chronicles Spike Lee's explosive rise to stardom, exploring such important issues as Black Nationalism, Hollywood stereotyping, and the rise of a powerful black middle class. Lee's prominence in American culture continues in 2006 with the release of The Inside Man and a forthcoming documentary on Hurricane Katrina. Spike Lee tells us as much about the last two decades of American social history as it does about the life of this fascinating director.
Based on the best-selling novel and with screenplay by James McBride, Miracle at St. Anna is a visually monumental film about a group of Buffalo soldiers who find themselves behind enemy lines in Italy during World War II. Filmed mostly in lush Tuscan countryside, with cinematography by Matthew Libatique (Requiem for a Dream) and still photography by David Lee (Malcolm X, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind) these 100 plus images capture the magic and intensity of this story about redemption and triumph over the bleakest of experiences. Including costume designs, storyboard sketches, text by the director himself, a full script book, and archival material from the second World War, Miracle at St. Anna: The Motion Picture, is not only a visual tribute to this epic, but also to the countless African American soldiers who risked their lives for a country in which they were treated with less respect than the enemy they were fighting.

Best Seat in the House , Spike Lee's evocative and compelling basketball memoir, interweaves several journeys over a course of thirty years. The first is professional basketball's metamorphosis from a fringe sport to the big-money spectacle it is today, filled with outrageously inflated salaries and egos. The other journey is that of Shelton Jackson Lee himself, who has gone from a skinny kid playing ball on the streets of Brooklyn, sneaking into Madison Square Garden to watch his beloved Knicks, to a student at Morehouse College and NYU film school, to a world-renowned film director and hoops fan.Along the way Spike takes readers on entertaining and provocative detours, including a one-on-one with that other Brooklyn-born, film-directing, Garden-inhabiting hoops fan, Woody Allen; reviews of sports movies (Spike has seen them all, and the results aren't pretty); an unusually candid interview with Michael Jordan; and a stark assessment of the role of African-American athletes--both in the big business of sports and in the broader culture. But overall, Best Seat in the House is a love letter, from a passionate and unswervingly devoted fan, to the game and the team that took possession of Spike's adolescent heart--the New York Knickerbockers--and held it without a turnover through thirty years. of bang-ups and fouls, bad calls and air balls.Best Seat in the House is a slam dunk.

Few filmmakers have had as profound an impact on popular culture as Spike Lee. With his comic heart and deadpan political stare, he has entertained and challenged filmgoers since 1986 with a rapid succession of popular and critical successes that have portrayed the most serious issues of our time. In Five for Five, essays by Terry McMillan, Toni Cade Bambara, Nelson George, Charles Johnson, Henry Louis Gates Jr. and Melvin Van Peebles and pictures by David Lee critique and celebrate Spike Lee's films from African-American perspectives. And Spike Lee, in an introduction to the book, tells his own story in his own words.
Celebrating 25 years since its seminal debut, "Do The Right Thing" remains one of the most important and controversial films of its era. Employing director Spike Lee's hometown of Brooklyn as the essential setting, this explosive film masterfully explores race and class relationships. Both a critical and popular success, "Do The Right Thing" became a landmark film that brought serious issues in the African American community to light and established Lee as a major director in American cinema. Lee also wrote the screenplay, produced, and even starred in this deeply personal film, which was applauded for its commanding visuals provided by Danny Aiello and John Turturro, and an assertive soundtrack featuring Public Enemy's "Fight the Power." Including an unprecedented insider's look at the film, with behind-the-scenes visuals and interviews, this impressive book celebrates the impact of "Do The Right Thing" on our culture throughout the years. The film is even credited with bringing President Barack Obama and the First Lady together on their first date!
