Presumed dead, a group of undergraduate students who go missing on a deserted Pacific island emerge one year later in two groups of ragged (and naked) survivors. All but one of the surviving women have conceived, and two students, plus their professor, are said to have died. In the glare of the world's media, every survivor sticks to the same unconvincing version of events. Piece-by-piece the narrator examines the evidence and conducts interviews with the survivors, to work out exactly what happened on the island during that year. Slowly, a disturbing picture emerges of feral humans driven by rivalry and sexual tension—a Lord of the Flies scenario for adults that suspiciously seems to test the dead professor's theory that by nature people are no different from apes in the wild.
An authority on human sexual behavior and evolution offers a provocative look at how advances in reproductive technology will affect human behavior and relationships in the twenty-first century. 50,000 first printing.
Even the happiest families endure periods of intense conflict and emotional strife. Read this eye-opening book and find out why. What does evolution have to do with morning sickness? With the stressful sound of a baby's cry? With sibling rivalry and adolescent rage? With child abuse? Everything, says Dr. Robin Baker, whose best-selling Sperm Wars illustrated the day-to-day Darwinism of human sexual life. Now Dr. Baker teams up with journalist and children's books author Elizabeth Oram to do the same for parenthood and family life. They look at a variety of instantly recognizable family situations and offer evolutionary explanations for common, often traumatic, events--explanations that not only make clear the genetic roots of family conflicts but that reveal, in many cases, their wider reproductive purpose. Highly provocative yet profoundly persuasive, this compelling book sheds light on the darkest secrets of family life and brings them out into the open where they can be addressed with honesty and without judgment.
Behavioural ecologists and evolutionary biologists have for a number of years been interested in the biological implications of sperm from different males competing for fertilization of the egg in the female tract. This book discusses these implications for human sexual behaviour and human infertility problems. Throughout the book, reference is made to work on the sexual behaviour of other animals, particularly primates and other mammals, where the resulting perspective helps to understand human behaviour.
Everyday the headlines bring news of the latest health scare, with worrying predictions for where developments in science will take us. We want and need to understand the phenomena that influence our lives, but science is often more subtle and more complicated than the headlines would suggest. Over a diverse range of subjects, Robin Baker proves that the science we as consumers believe to be true is often an oversimplication - a convenient way of explaining complex subjects which are little understood. His investigations reach their own, startling conclusions. Could it be possible, for example, that using sunscreen is actually increasing our chance of skin cancer? More and more people are taking Prozac, but does science have an easy answer to explain why? We all know the arguments in favour of conservation, but could there by strong biological arguments against it?
In Hollow Men, Strange Women , Robin Baker provides a masterly reappraisal of Israel's experience during its Settlement of Canaan as narrated in the Book of Judges. Written under Assyrian suzerainty in the reign of Manasseh, Judges is both a theological commentary on the Settlement and an esoteric work of prophecy. Its apparent historicity subtly encrypts a grim forewarning of Judah's future, and, in its extensive treatment of otherness, Judges explores the meaning of God's covenant with Israel.Robin Baker's scholarly and perceptive reading draws on a deep understanding of ancient Hebrew and Mesopotamian symbolic codes to interpret the riddles in this many-layered text. The Book of Judges reveals complex literary configurations from which past, present, and future are simultaneously presented.
A man gives a lift to an unusual hitchhiker, a woman who has been thrown bound and naked from a car. On the journey he hears the bizarre but intriguing story of her predicament. It seems that there is nobody who could be the father of her child, least of all her rich powerful and vindictive husband.Mark de Vries has a passion for studying lions and for several months each year he teaches Zoology at an English University. The rest of his time he spends with his research team in a tiny settlement in the remote Kalahari Desert amidst a group of tribal Tswana. Against his will, Mark is drawn into the mystery of the hitchhiker's child - until a sequence of murders, rapes, intimidation and blackmail means that his livelihood and even his survival depend on finding the answer. But it takes a brave experiment by him and his research team to finally discover the truth, an experiment that they have no choice but to conduct on themselves. When the mystery is solved it becomes clear that what happened to the hitchhiker could - without the person's knowledge -happen to anybody. And it is not only women who might suffer the consequences.Set partly in the stifling atmosphere of English academia and partly in the dangerous and endangered wilderness of the Kalahari Desert, THE HITCHHIKER'S CHILD is a story of murder and mystery, love and sacrifice. Max is a young lecturer in anthropology who always saw himself living in the jungle studying never-before-contacted tribes, but at every step he has been thwarted. One day in a second-hand bookshop he discovers a couple of handwritten pages stuck in a book. They seem to have been written by a Victorian adventuress who really had once lived with an unknown tribe in the Amazon. Determined to discover more, Max is dragged into a world of mysterious suicides, pagan sects, child prostitution and police harassment. But as he uncovers fabulous stories of intrepid women following their dreams he also finds love with a talented young photographer desperate to know who she really is. As cultures and moralities collide Max finally gets to live in the Amazon – though not for the reasons he would have wished.CABALLITO is much more than a mystery story about identity, detection and the pursuit of dreams. It is also a vision of an alternative society, one in which there is no such thing as fatherhood, where childhood innocence has no meaning, and where communities openly share everything including each other. Once upon a time it was how all people lived – and a few still do. Baker (author of the modern classic in evolutionary biology SPERM WARS) infuses CABALLITO as he did his previous novel PRIMAL with all his acknowledged expertise on human sexual psychology and behavior.
About the Author
Dr ROBIN BAKER is a novelist, popular science writer, lecturer and broadcaster.

In this ground-breaking study, Robin Baker investigates the contribution ancient Mesopotamian theology made to the origins of Christianity. Drawing on a formidable range of primary sources, Baker's conclusions challenge the widely held opinion that the theological imprint of Babylonia and Assyria on the New Testament is minimal, and what Mesopotamian legacy it contains was mediated by the Hebrew Bible and ancient Jewish sources. After evaluating and substantially supplementing previous research on this mediation, Baker demonstrates significant direct Mesopotamian influence on the New Testament presentation of Jesus and particularly the character of his kingship. He also identifies likely channels of transmission. Baker documents substantial differences among New Testament authors in borrowing Mesopotamian conceptions to formulate their Christology. This monograph is an essential resource for specialists and students of the New Testament as well as for scholars interested in religious transmission in the ancient Near East and the afterlife of Mesopotamian culture.
