Raymond Chang was an emeritus professor at Williams College in the Department of Chemistry and a textbook author. His most popular textbook was titled Chemistry, which was published up to the thirteenth edition. He also published a few children's books. He was a naturalized American citizen who came from Hong Kong to America to start graduate studies at Yale University. There he received both his master's and PhD degrees. His family was originally from Shanghai, but Chang was born in Hong Kong as a result of his family's deportation in 1937. They left to escape the Japanese invasion of China. However, in 1941, Chang and his family returned to Shanghai for eight years before they again re-returned to Hong Kong. As a result of his forced movement through different regions of China Chang became fluent in many Chinese dialects. At the age of seventeen, Chang followed his sister to London. He received his B.Sc. with a first-class honors degree in chemistry from the University of London and Ph. D. from Yale University. He completed his postdoctoral research at Washington University in St. Louis and served as a professor at Hunter College of the City University of New York, prior to joining the faculty at Williams College in 1968. On August 3, 1968, he married Margaret A. Scrogin. They had one daughter, Elizabeth Chang.
Designed for the two-semester general chemistry course, Chang’s best-selling textbook continues to take a traditional approach and is often considered a student and teacher favorite. The book features a straightforward, clear writing style and proven problem-solving strategies. It continues the tradition of providing a firm foundation in chemical concepts and principles while presenting a broad ra
"This pleasant, unpretentious account [is] a small stream leading to the ocean of the culture of China."― Scientific American Not a how-to text, this beguiling book is instead a fascinating look at Chinese language and culture. Ranging through history, literature, folklore, linguistics, and sociology, this is a breezy, straightforward primer of surprising breadth.
The fifth edition of General Chemistry continues the tradition of presenting only the material that is essential for a one-year general chemistry course. It strikes a balance between theory and application by incorporating real-world examples; helping students visualize the three-dimensional atomic and molecular structures that are the basis of chemical activity; and developing problem-solving and
Hailed by advance reviewers as a kinder, gentler P. Chem. text, this book meets the needs of a one-semester course or a full-year course in physical chemistry. It is an ideal choice for classes geared toward pre-medical and life sciences students. Or, as stated in a May 2001 review in Journal of Chemical Education, this text meets these students where they are and opens the door to physical chemis
Chang's newest text has been shortened, streamlined and optimized for a one-semester introductory course in physical chemistry for students of biosciences. Most students enrolled in this course have taken general chemistry, organic chemistry, and a year of physics and calculus. Only basic skills of differential and integral calculus are required for understanding the equations. For premedical stud
Aimed at the one-year general chemistry course, Essential A Core Text for General Chemistry offers a shorter, more compact presentation of topics at the same depth and with the same rigor as other traditional "mainstream" texts. Because the text includes only the core topics that are necessary for a good foundation in general chemistry, students are offered a shorter and less expensive text withou

Following in the wake of Chang's two other best-selling physical chemistry textbooks (Physical Chemistry for the Chemical and Biological Sciences and Physical Chemistry for the Biosciences), this new title introduces laser spectroscopist Jay Thoman (Williams College) as co-author. This comprehensive new text has been extensively revised both in level and scope. Targeted to a mainstream physical ch
While scientists win occasional skirmishes in the battle against cancer, the overall war continues to go badly. Stories abound about revolutionary drugs that may be available in the future, but offer no real help to those who have cancer today. At present, conventional approaches continue to rely on a narrowly focused strategy of treatments, with doctors using, at best, only one or two drugs or ot
