Today Teilhard's pioneering work has become more and more relevant particularly to those interested in determining the moral implications of our ecological failures. While Teilhard's later work is still well known, "The Making of a Mind" shows how these thoughts developed in the mind of a young man, drafted into the trenches of World War I, who shared the seeds of these later ideas in a series of letters written to his devoted cousin. Beautifully written and translated, these letters make a great introduction to Teilhard's work and to "Hymn to the Universe" which contains the early examination of these ideas in a series of essays to which the letters refer. While Teilhard's later work is often difficult to comprehend, these earlier works create the ground on which a deeper understanding of the later work sits.
