Award-winning couples therapist Peter Fraenkel argues that most relationship problems can be traced to partners being out of sync on the powerful but mostly hidden dimension of time. Differences in daily rhythms, personal pace, punctuality, time perspective, and priorities about how time is allocated can all lead to couple conflict. Yet the fascinating fact is that these polarizing time differences play a potent role in attracting lovers in the first place. In this trailblazing new book, he draws on his original research to show how a clearer understanding of these forces can improve the health of your relationship and even rescue a failing one.

Strategies and skills for therapists working with couples about to dissolve.Therapy with couples on the brink of relationship dissolution involves unique challenges. Partners present with high levels of conflict, low levels of intimate connection, disdain and discouragement, and limited patience or hope. These couples have often tried therapy without lasting success, and announce that “this is our last chance.” Partners want to see evidence in the first session that the therapist can offer something new and that change is possible. Peter Fraenkel presents a practical, creative, integrative approach that combines action- and insight-oriented techniques to help last-chance couples manage conflict, modulate intense negative emotions, address power struggles, develop mutual compassion, and restore emotional intimacy and pleasurable connection. Special attention is paid to developing a collaborative therapeutic alliance when partners have little motivation for therapy or faith that it can be effective. Through engaging in “nonbinding experiments in possibility,” partners can then better evaluate whether to “stay or go.”
This is an updated and expanded new edition (formerly Water Pumping Devices), surveying the water-lifting technologies that are available and appropriate for smallholdings. It examines the costs and general suitability of the different technologies to enable farmers and policy makers to make informed choices.More than one billion people still do not have access to safe drinking water, and almost two billion people suffer from diseases arising from contaminated water due to poor sanitation. Irrigation is essential for the basic food requirements of billions of people. The growing world population and global climate change make the challenges of providing adequate clean water, sanitation, and food ever more pressing. At the heart of effective irrigation lies the problem of lifting or pumping water. This handbook provides a detailed review of the water-lifting technologies available for irrigation, along with new information covering the provision of drinking water for humans and livestock. Water Lifting Devices has long been the authority on the subject and this new third edition provides updated essential practical information for farmers, development workers, and all who need to make informed choices about water lifting technologies.
Efficient and effective irrigation of the land can have a dramatic effect on the agricultural output and economic well-being of a community. The smallholdings, defined in this book as up to 25 hectares (60 acres), can be the source of a significant proportion of a country's food production. At the heart of effective irrigation lies the problem of lifting or pumping water, and this handbook, newly revised and reformatted, surveys the water-lifting technologies that are available and appropriate for smallholdings. It is a detailed and practical review of the options, especially for irrigation but alsofor other purposes, and the costs and general suitability of the different technologies are examined with the aim of enabling farmers and policymakers to make informed choices.
Guides the reader systematically through the basic methods of hydrology and site survey and describes how to set up an appropriate scheme, with detailed technical information; also covers the essential economic considerations and maintenance requirements.
Peter Fraenkel here gives a vivid account of a childhood in a middle-class, non-observant Jewish family in Nazi Germany, forced to emigrate to Zambia (then Northern Rhodesia) in 1939. Here the contrast could hardly be greater, from persecuted Jew, to 'enemy alien' in colonial Northern Rhodesia, to re-assimilation into the privileged colonial elite. Following education in Northern and Southern Rhodesia he worked for the Northern Rhodesian and later, Central Broadcasting Service. Here his pioneering work and support for racial equality in a deeply racist society connected with his earlier life - 'no fixed abode' but in tune with humane liberalism.

Using windpumps can be a reliable, cost-effective and environmentally benign means of providing a supply of clean water in rural areas. Although winpumps have been in commercial production for over 100 years, there is still enormous potential for their use in communities and on farms throughout the developing world. The scarcity of appropriate information on the technology, economics and practicalities of using windpumps has helped to restrict the development of windpumping. This guide aims to assist development workers and project managers in assessing their needs and choosing and implementing an appropriate windpumping A guide for development workers looks systematically at every aspect of the implementation of a wind-powered water-pumping system. Different situations and applications are discussed, along with details of how to assess existing local resources and evaluate the relative economics. Simple methods are described to help in sizing and specifying appropriate types of windpump, and advice given on machine procurement, installation, operation and maintenance. An illustrated buyersÆ guide gives full details of over 40 of the worldÆs major manufacturers and the range of winpumping equipment and services they offer, and lists addresses of manufacturers in 36 different countries around the world. Other appendices give useful information for life-cycle costing and summary data for assessing other methods of pumping. The authors of this book are applications specialists with IT Power and the Stockholm Environment Institute.
