Lorsqu'en plein cœur du jardin du Luxembourg commence la partie d’échecs contre ce jeune inconnu arrogant qui déplace ses pièces sans réfléchir en roulant des cigarettes, le héros de Un combat , un vieux joueur expérimenté, comprend que sa carrière est finie… Et son public, pourtant fidèle, le croit aussi. L’issue de la partie dira ce qu’il faut penser de certaines « évidences ».

Il volume raccoglie le opere di Patrick Suskind. "Il Contrabbasso", testo teatrale che precede di alcuni anni proprio "Il profumo", l'ormai celeberrima storia di Grenouille, il più grande profumiere di tutti i tempi e del suo folle disegno di creare una fragranza per asservire il cuore di chi lo annusa. E se Grenouille è un uomo ossessionato dalla sua idea, proprio Ossessioni è il titolo della raccolta di tre brevi racconti, cupi e impietosi, e ossessione è quella che domina il protagonista di "Il piccione", che nello sguardo immobile del volatile percepisce una sfida al suo ideale di vita. Ma anche il protagonista della Storia del signor Sommer è dominato da una pulsione che lo spinge a camminare dall'alba al tramonto, fra il compassionevole interesse dei passanti e la fantasiosa curiosità dei bambini. Tuttavia qui il racconto assume toni più ironici e lievi, sottolineati alla perfezione dai disegni di Sempé. Chiude il volume un saggio su un tema classico della letteratura occidentale, il rapporto fra Eros e Thanatos, che Suskind tratta in modo diretto e senza timori reverenziali, con quello spirito beffardo e sfuggente a ogni classificazione che lo caratterizza anche come narratore.
