Mark Curtis is an independent author and journalist. He is a former Research Fellow at the Royal Institute of International Affairs (Chatham House) and Director of the World Development Movement. He is currently an Honorary Research Fellow at the University of Strathclyde and has been Visiting Research Fellow at the Institut Francais des Relations Internationales, Paris and the Deutsche Gesellschaft fur Auswartige Politik, Bonn. Mark has written six books and numerous articles on British and US foreign policies and international development and trade issues. Alongside his work as an analyst of British foreign policy, Mark has worked in the field of international development for 18 years, including as Head of Global Advocacy and Policy at Christian Aid and Head of Policy at ActionAid. He is a graduate of Goldsmiths’ College, University of London and the London School of Economics and Political Science.
In his explosive new book, Mark Curtis reveals a new picture of Britain's role in the world since 1945 and in the 'war against terrorism' by offering a comprehensive critique of the Blair government's foreign policy. Curtis argues that Britain is an 'outlaw state', often a violator of international law and ally of many repressive regimes. He reasons not only that Britain's foreign policies are generally unethical but that they are also making the world more dangerous and unequal. The Web of Deceit describes the staggering gulf that has arisen between New Labour's professed commitment to upholding ethical values and the reality of current policies. It outlines the new phase in global intervention, the immorality of British policy in Afghanistan, Kosovo, Iraq and Indonesia and support for repressive governments in Israel, Russia, Turkey and Saudi Arabia. Curtis also reveals Britain's acquiescence in the Rwanda genocide and economic policies in the World Trade Organisation that are increasing poverty and inequality around the world. Drawing on formerly secret government files, the book also shows British complicity in the slaughter of a million people in Indonesia in 1965; the depopulation of the island of Diego Garcia; the overthrow of governments in Iran and British Guiana; repressive colonial policies in Kenya, Malaya and Oman; and much more.
Rare book
Mark Curtis introduces the concept of "Unpeople" ― those whose lives have been deemed expendable, worthless, in the pursuit of foreign policy objectives. The book is based on new revelations from declassified government documents.
Shows how transnational corporations use lobby groups to shape EU policy. New updated edition
Obsessed with what we can do with our mobile phones and the web, it's easy to lose sight of the big picture, because so much is changing and so fast. We are distracted by it. This book steps back to look at our use of new technology and draws some uncomfortable and challenging conclusions about what society may need to do to get the best, not the worst, out of the digital era. Why are our fundamental notions of space and time changing? Why going mobile is the big difference. How new technology makes us prefer the distant to the close at hand Can we sustain current levels of communication? Will we have to start blocking things out? How are people doing this already? Why time is the biggest issue for most people, and technology is not helping. How can we make media deeper? How our sense of who we are is changing too. Why building trust online is going to be so important, and such a challenge. Why we need to focus on social networks. Why a new sense of discipline is required to prevent us drowning in distraction. Why each of us can use digital to be creative.
This is a radical critique of the way in which British foreign policy has operated since 1945.
Set in Paris in the early twentieth century, the narrator, a benevolent yet fretful gentleman had an existence of rumination and questioning his reality. He doubted his sanity and whether he had an affliction to paranoia. It was a concoction of neurosis, which affected his composition. He had clashed with his anxieties for most of his lifetime, but when Eliza absconds he swiftly descends altogether into madness. As time progressed no remedy seemed to cure his ailment of mental exhaustion, which deepened like a cave that has been weather-beaten relentlessly by venomous waves.

A complete treatise on the subject of dimensional management, this book is designed to provide the reader with a comprehensive systems approach to all facets of dimension and tolerance development, analysis, inspection and documentation. Often referred to as “Dimensional Management,” this systems approach focuses on optimizing the interchangeability of multi-component manufactured products. And it demonstrates that through the detailed description of known manual and computer-aided tolerance analysis techniques, an understanding of manufacturing variation and the mitigation of its undesirable effects can be achieved. College-level engineering and technology students and working professionals involved in the design and manufacture of precision parts and assemblies will come to rely on Dimensional Management as an invaluable resource.Provides a complete treatment of all aspects of dimensioning and tolerancing as it relates to the design and manufacturing.Contains more than 125 detailed illustrations and tables.Features an entire chapter devoted to state-of-the-art computer-aided tolerance techniques.Includes a CD-ROM that demonstrates a family of Sigmund software products through a detailed user-friendly Power Point presentation. These proprietary computer-aided tolerancing products were developed and are sold by Varatech Engineering Consultants, and are quite possibly the most refined and powerful software of their type available on the market today.Includes a comprehensive chapter on GD&T as specified in the national dimensioning and tolerancing standard, ASME Y14.5M 1994.

An American Road Trip of a Lifetime on a Harley Davidson. This book is not just a narrative of a solo trip across Western USA, filled with Scotsman's humour; but also a guide for others thinking about a similar trip. Here's the synopsis from the start of the book. These are some of the genteel phrases you will encounter in this -“Geeez-oh… John Muir hud his heid screwed oan!”…..,-“This bike was built for Giants – you have to get it Telt!”….. and of course-“That’s how we do it in Vegas Baby!”Is it a travel book? Yes, it is a travel book in as far as it describes a Harley Davidson Trip covering a thousand miles of Western USA. However, it also not a travel book but a narrative of the trip of a lifetime for a normal Scotsman, running from the lunacy of Las Vegas; through the majestic Desert; the mighty Yosemite; the old-style of San Francisco; the biker’s dream of the Big Sur and the total and utter madness of L.A.For potential bikers, each chapter has some facts about places to go, potential pitfalls and is perhaps a guide to anyone thinking of doing a similar trip. The fun part is a series of narratives (with more than a little Scotsman’s skew) sent back to Scotland during the trip. Some of the ridiculous anecdotes will raise a smile whereas others will show the difficulties that a biker or tourist could find along the way. I hope that they also convey the sense of surprised, wonder that I felt far more often than I could have predicted, along the way.Whether you are an experienced biker, someone contemplating a similar trip, or just looking to hear some heartfelt or amusing anecdotes, I hope you will enjoy this book. Of my travels so far, this one has been the most varied and fun.
