First published in 1866, this book caused a sensation in Europe and America, sparking a wave of recreational canoeing by such well-known figures as Robert Louis Stevenson and inspiring paddlers from the Victorians to the modern practitioners of canoe camping and sea kayaking.
Riveting tale of a 1,500-mile voyage on a 21-foot sailboat in 1867, undertaken in response to a "Boat Exhibition" and regatta staged by Napoleon III to encourage the youth of France to explore the rivers and streams of their native land. This rapturous account became known as "the book that launched a thousand ships."
When you think of Hawaii, you probably think of beautiful islands, pineapples, and hula dancers. But did you know that Hawaii has a long and rich history? Before it was part of the United States, Hawaii was an independent country ruled by kings and queens. The last queen of Hawaii was a proud woman named Liliuokalani. This is her story.Reading 2.8Guided Reading P 700L
John MacGregor's second major voyage in the Rob Roy canoe through Norway, Sweden, Denmark and northern Germany, with appendices including a description of the Rob Roy's construction.
John MacGregor was born in Gravesend, England in 1825 and became widely known as an adventure traveler and pioneer of the sport of canoeing, introducing the kayak into Europe following a visit to North America in 1858. He knew such diverse figures as Harriett Beecher Stowe, Henry Morton Stanley, and David Livingstone. His adventures took him from the summit of Mt. Blanc to the Canadian wilderness, to the Russian Far East, down the rivers of Norway and Sweden, to North Africa, and the Middle East. His popular descriptions of his adventures in his ‘canoes,’ each named Rob Roy after the family’s historic namesake, became immensely popular and the expedition from the Nile to the Jordan River and the Sea of Galilee described in The Rob Roy on the Jordan was his most successful work. This new edition contains an extensive biographical and historical introduction, updated annotations, as well as restorations of the 8 maps, 59 woodcuts and four plates from the 1869 first edition.

This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

'The Voyage Alone in the Yawl "Rob Roy"' is the story of John MacGregor's incredible 1,500-mile solo sailing journey on a 21-foot boat in 1867. This book is a testament to MacGregor's pioneering spirit and his role in creating the canoe-cruising craze of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, inspiring generations of adventurers to follow in his wake. Although some of his recommendations are outdated, the general tone of adventurous endeavor is sure to inspire readers to explore the world around them.
Monograph about the artist Dwight Mackintosh
The universe is a very strange place. Ask any physicist. Cosmological and quantum actions often contradict common sense.Members of the Level II civilization called the Hamlet discover that something is mining our universe for its energy potential, resulting in massive world-line destruction. During the course of their investigation, they inadvertently rescue a group of people from an attack. Amongst those saved were Ryan Foley, an out of work middle-aged man, Milena Amara, a fourteen-year-old girl, and the music band Overnight Distress. Together, they need to build new lives for themselves in an advanced but foreign society, and perhaps, they just might be able to contribute towards its defense.A blend of hard science fiction, sociology and musical fantasy rolled into a single package.

"In my household I have nominated this book as my Book of the Year. I read over 30 books a year in the course of my work, so it is in a good field.” - Professor Guy Standing, author of The PrecariatTiananmen, the Arab Spring, Occupy. Great ideals—yet none built anything lasting. Changing the world needs more than inspired it needs architecture."A formidable effort, very learned and extremely wide-ranging. It has certain family resemblances to The Dawn of Everything by David Graeber and David Wengrow, Yuval Noah Harari's three volumes, and books by Steven Pinker and Jared Diamond." - Barry Jones, global best-selling author, former Minister for Science & president of the Australian Labor Party "I've never read anything like it. It explains so much (just about everything, really) about the present sorry state of human affairs. And it has put politics into a manageable perspective for me. I sense, at last, that there is a way out of the straightjacket we have traded our freedom for.“i am astonished that his conclusions haven't been brought together before this. i am also astonished that the idea of re-designing democracy has never been raised." - Ross Roache "The book offers great and timely value and I want to see it in as many thoughtful hands as possible. This is such a critical topic and fine piece of work. Unlike the typical online manifesto, full of bold yet incoherent mandates, it clearly defines, contextually situates, supports, and suggests how to operationalize its ideas… - Major Mark Harris, PhD, knowledge analyst, US Air Force (retired) "Fascinating and inspiring. I agree with the energising and unifying potential of the idea of a new constitution, addressing the problems he so clearly describes. My hope is that someone with the talents of a demagogue or an advertising guru will catch on and help the idea spread." - Dr David Erdal, evolutionary psychologist & author Macgregor’s writing is clear, direct, and philosophical yet deeply grounded in practicality. His insights draw from a broad understanding of political history and theory, but his message remains accessible for readers who might be new to concepts like “political architecture” or “decontaminating politics.” This makes The Mechanics of Changing the World not only a thought-provoking read but also a motivating one for those interested in lasting, actionable change.Ultimately, The Mechanics of Changing the World is an inspiring manifesto for those disillusioned with traditional politics but not yet ready to give up on the democratic ideal. - Vegetarian on GoodreadsThe Mechanics of Changing the World argues that war, inequality & environmental breakdown are insoluble within our current system of government. That they will only be curable at the level of the level of democratic design.One-off campaigns are so ‘third draft democracy’ is a suite of interlocking reforms to decontaminate politics, decentralize information & democratize decision-making. It’s a natural evolution of the first (Greek) & second (Euro-American) ‘drafts’ of the democratic experiment. We know much more about human nature than we did in 1789. We’ve learned we’re an egalitarian species, and are good at collective decision-making. We hate rigged rules and biased information. We’re naturals at social harmony. It’s way past time this knowledge was reflected in our national constitutions. Time turns a constitution into a Pandora’s box—releasing ‘plagues’ such as bought politics and captured information. We’re forever going after the our real attention should be on the box. - John Macgregor
