Gloria Marie Steinem (born March 25, 1934) is an American feminist, journalist, and social and political activist who became nationally recognized as a leader of, and media spokeswoman for, the women's liberation movement in the late 1960s and 1970s. A prominent writer and key counterculture era political figure, Steinem has founded many organizations and projects and has been the recipient of many awards and honors. She was a columnist for New York magazine and co-founded Ms. magazine. In 1969, she published an article, " After Black Power, Women's Liberation", which, along with her early support of abortion rights, catapulted her to national fame as a feminist leader. In 2005, Steinem worked alongside Jane Fonda and Robin Morgan to co-found the Women's Media Center, an organization that works to amplify the voices of women in the media through advocacy, media and leadership training, and the creation of original content. Steinem currently serves on the board of the organization. She continues to involve herself in politics and media affairs as a commentator, writer, lecturer, and organizer, campaigning for candidates and reforms and publishing books and articles.
NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER - ONE OF O: THE OPRAH MAGAZINE'S TEN FAVORITE BOOKS OF THE YEAR - NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY Harper's Bazaar - St. Louis Post-Dispatch - Publishers Weekly Gloria Steinem--writer, activist, organizer, and inspiring leader--now tells a story she has never told before, a candid account of her life as a traveler, a listener, and a catalyst for change. Includes "Secrets," a new chapter! When people ask me why I still have hope and energy after all these years, I always say: Because I travel. Taking to the road--by which I mean letting the road take you--changed who I thought I was. The road is messy in the way that real life is messy. It leads us out of denial and into reality, out of theory and into practice, out of caution and into action, out of statistics and into stories--in short, out of our heads and into our hearts.Gloria Steinem had an itinerant childhood. When she was a young girl, her father would pack the family in the car every fall and drive across country searching for adventure and trying to make a living. The seeds were planted: Gloria realized that growing up didn't have to mean settling down. And so began a lifetime of travel, of activism and leadership, of listening to people whose voices and ideas would inspire change and revolution. My Life on the Road is the moving, funny, and profound story of Gloria's growth and also the growth of a revolutionary movement for equality--and the story of how surprising encounters on the road shaped both. From her first experience of social activism among women in India to her work as a journalist in the 1960s; from the whirlwind of political campaigns to the founding of Ms. magazine; from the historic 1977 National Women's Conference to her travels through Indian Country--a lifetime spent on the road allowed Gloria to listen and connect deeply with people, to understand that context is everything, and to become part of a movement that would change the world. In prose that is revealing and rich, Gloria reminds us that living in an open, observant, and "on the road" state of mind can make a difference in how we learn, what we do, and how we understand each other.Praise for My Life on the Road"Like Steinem herself, [My Life on the Road] is thoughtful and astonishingly humble. It is also filled with a sense of the momentous while offering deeply personal insights into what shaped her."--O: The Oprah Magazine"A lyrical meditation on restlessness and the quest for equity . . . Part of the appeal of My Life is how Steinem, with evocative, melodic prose, conveys the air of discovery and wonder she felt during so many of her journeys. . . . The lessons imparted in Life on the Road offer more than a reminiscence. They are a beacon of hope for the future."--USA Today"A warmly companionable look back at nearly five decades as itinerant feminist organizer and standard-bearer. If you've ever wondered what it might be like to sit down with Ms. Steinem for a casual dinner, this disarmingly intimate book gives a pretty good idea, mixing hard-won pragmatic lessons with more inspirational insights."--The New York Times"Steinem rocks. My Life on the Road abounds with fresh insights and is as populist as can be."--The Boston Globe"In person and in her writing, Steinem exudes a rare combination of calm, humility and honesty about her weaknesses that explains all she has accomplished."--Jezebel
This updated edition of Gloria Steinem's classic bestseller — called "the ultimate self-help book" by the Los Angeles Times — features a new preface by the author. For decades, Gloria Steinem has led a social revolution against injustice. In Revolution from Within , she sets out to restore the authority and self-confidence that such injustice has undermined. Steinem uses stories from her own life and the lives of others to illustrate the many connections between the personal and the political, offering readers lessons on how to bring down barriers to equality — both external and internal.“This book has stayed in print longer than anything I’ve ever written. I think this is because the idea of self-esteem is so basic. Words may change, from self-esteem and self-respect to Gay Pride and Black Lives Matter, but the principle remains the same. Valuing the unique self within each of us is the source of democracy and rebelling against injustice.” —Gloria Steinem, from the Preface “Gloria Steinem is herself a one-woman revolution. Now she inspires us yet again with her moral clarity, her wit, and a message that we are in dire need of hearing—that the revolution must be both personal and political if we are ever to create a truly decent and equal world for women.” —Susan Faludi

A beautifully illustrated collection of Gloria Steinem's most inspirational and outrageous quotes, with an introduction and essays by the feminist activist herself. For decades--and especially now, in these times of crisis--people around the world have found guidance, humor, and unity in Gloria Steinem's gift for creating quotes that offer hope and inspire action. From her early days as a journalist and feminist activist, Steinem's words have helped generations to empower themselves and work together.Covering topics from relationships ("Many are looking for the right person. Too few are trying to be the right person.") to the patriarchy ("Men are liked better when they win. Women are liked better when they lose. This is how the patriarchy is enforced every day.") and activism ("Revolutions, like trees, grow from the bottom up."), this is the definitive collection of Steinem's words on what matters most. Steinem sees quotes as "the poetry of everyday life," so she also has included a few favorites from friends, including bell hooks, Flo Kennedy, and Michelle Obama, in this book that will make you want to laugh, march, and create some quotes of your own. In fact, at the end of the book, there's a special space for readers to add their own quotes and others they've found inspiring. The Truth Will Set You Free, But First It Will Piss You Off! is both timeless and timely. It is a gift of hope from Steinem to readers, and a book to share with friends.
Outrageous Acts and Everyday Rebellions—a phenomenal success that sold nearly half a million copies since its original publication in 1983—is Gloria Steinem's most diverse and timeless collection of essays. Both male and female readers have acclaimed it as a witty, warm, and life-changing view of the world—"as if women mattered." Steinem's truly personal writing is here, from the humorous exposé "I Was a Playboy Bunny" to the moving tribute to her mother "Ruth's Song (Because She Could Not Sing It)" to prescient essays on female genital mutilation and the difference between erotica and pornography. The satirical and hilarious "If Men Could Menstruate" alone is worth the price of admission. This second edition features a new preface by the author and added notes on classic essays.
It’s a truism, for instance, that a few clothes are more shocking than none. But for women especially, bras, panties, bathing suits, and other stereotypical gear are visual reminders of a commercial, idealized feminine image that our real and diverse female bodies can’t possibly fit. Without those visual references, however, each individual woman’s body can be accepted on its own terms. We stop being comparatives. We begin to be unique. After spending a few days at a spa in the company of 90 or so women, Gloria Steinem wrote In Praise of Women’s Bodies, a short but powerful essay that’s part ode and part treatise and fully in awe of the female form, in all its unique variety. In Praise of Women’s Bodies was originally published in Ms., April 1982. Cover design by Adil Dara.
In this sensitive, provocative portrait of Marilyn Monroe, Gloria Steinem reveals the woman behind the myth--the child Norma Jean--and the forces in America that shaped her into the fantasy and icon that has never died. 16 pages of full-color photos.
My one writerly habit was describing everything I did, no matter how absorbing or how trivial, as if I were standing outside myself and watching. That is, I would get up in the morning and look out the window, all the time thinking, “She slid from the rumpled bed, yawned, and looked out at the pale . . . no, thin winter light. It was going to be another one of those days. . . .” That kind of thing; very corny.Every writer’s origin story is different. In How I Became a Writer , Gloria Steinem charts her unlikely journey from restless teen in Toledo, Ohio, to professional magazine writer in Manhattan—with sage advice and “random directives” for getting started. How I Became a Writer was originally published in Glamour , October 1965.Cover design by Adil Dara.
“As a speaker, writer and feminist spokesperson, Steinem has no equal. She expresses herself with irresistible conviction…Steinem sprinkles her talk with wit while offering hope and encouragement that our lives can be better.” -Library JournalGloria Steinem offers her views on the interconnectedness between self-esteem and sexism, racism, politics, and physical and sexual abuse in this entertaining and educating program, recorded live in New York City.Bonus audio of Scholars, Witches and Other Freedom Fighters:This talk by Gloria Steinem is a recording that took place in 1993 in Salem, Massachusetts, in concurrence with the 300th anniversary of The Salem Witch Trials. In this incredibly enlightening and motivational audio, Steinem puts into social and historical context the role of society in the treatment and mistreatment of women.
Once upon a time (just a few years ago), psychologists believed that the way we chose to communicate was largely a function of personality. If certain conversational styles were more common to one sex than the other (more abstract and aggressive talk for men, for instance, more personal and equivocal talk for women), then this was just another tribute to the influence of biology on personality. In her landmark essay, Men and Women Talking, Gloria Steinem confronts long-held misconceptions about the supposedly scientific differences in the way men and women communicate, debunking—among other things—the myth of the “talkative woman.” Men and Women Talking was originally published in Ms., May 1981. “…the deepest reason for the self-deprecation and uncertainty of rich women may be the simplest: the closer we are to power, the more passive we must be kept. Intimacy and access make rebellion very dangerous.”In The Problem With Rich Women, Gloria Steinem explores how and why feminism failed to reach women in powerful families, and provides an urgent and persuasive argument for rebellion among upper-class women. The Problem With Rich Women was originally published in Ms., June 1986. Cover design by Adil Dara.
Gloria Steinem became a spokesperson for issues about aging quite accidentally after declaring to a reporter on the occasion of her fortieth birthday, "This is what forty looks like. We've been lying for so long, who would know?" Because of this casual comment about her age and about the collective societal pressure to lie about our age she received an avalanche of thanks and support from other women facing age discrimination. This caused her to realize the far reaching dimensions of age oppression. In her inspiring essay, Doing Sixty, Steinem shares her views on age stereotyping, the unexpected liberation that comes with growing older, and defines what she perceives as the fact that women become more radical as they age. The essay also sheds light on the forces that shaped her life and for readers who have only heard bits and pieces about her the essay offers a primer on her bold and logical theories. In the essay, Steinem describes turning fifty as "leaving a much-loved and familiar country" and turning sixty "as arriving at the border of a new one" in which she looked forward to "trading moderation for excess, defiance for openness, and planning for the unknown." In the Preface, Doing Seventy, written when Steinem is just past seventy and twelve years after the essay was first published, Steinem explains the development of her precious sense of mortality and time. Elders Academy Press is proud to have published Ms. Steinem's enlightening and thought-provoking essay thus allowing it to appear for the first time as an independent volume.
In Mein Kampf, Hitler wrote that “We must also do away with the conception that the treatment of the body is the affair of every individual.” It was a direct slap at the feminist movement of Germany in the late 19th and early 20th century, an influential force for, among other things, divorce, contraception, and abortion; in short, for a woman’s right to control her own body.In her two-part essay, The Nazi Connection, Gloria Steinem examines Adolf Hitler views on personal freedoms, and his war against feminism, and compares them to the 1980 Republication Platform and its support for a Constitutional ban on abortion. The Nazi Connection was originally published in Ms., October and November 1980. Cover design by Adil Dara.
An interviewer once asked James Baldwin what he would say if a man from Mars suddenly appeared and asked, “What are you?” “At the time I left the country in 1948,” he replied, “I would have answered your man from Mars by saying ‘I am a writer’…Now I think I’d say to ‘I am a writer with a lot of work to do and wondering if I can do it!’”A portrait of the singular author at 40, Gloria Steinem’s James Baldwin, An Original finds Baldwin between rehearsals for his Broadway play, Blues for Mister Charlie , a tragedy loosely based on the murder of Emmett Till in Mississippi, as he attempts to get his vision from page to stage uncompromised—and wrestles with his growing fame as a writer and activist.James Baldwin, An Original was originally published in Vogue , July 1964.Cover design by Adil Dara.

Gloria Steinem's 1963 book celebrating beach culture dedicated "To Ocean Beach Pier that was and to Paradise Island". Introduction by John Kenneth Galbraith (yes, the economist and diplomat). Fascinating peak into early '60s attitudes to leisure.
This talk by Gloria Steinem - timely, timeless, and recommended for all genders - is a never-before-released recording that took place in 1993 in Salem, Massachusetts, in concurrence with the 300th anniversary of the Salem Witch Trials. In this incredibly enlightening and motivational audio program, Steinem puts into social and historical context the role of society in the treatment and mistreatment of women.Excerpt from “As you can tell from the title I had given to my speech, 'Scholars, Witches and Other Freedom Fighters,'...I couldn’t resist reflecting on the reasons that both are freedom fighters, even though scholars are serene, non-activist, honorable, and respectable and witches are emotional, activist and all-together dishonorable. In other words, the first are masculine in their imagery and the second are feminine in their imagery. But both have a role to play as revolutionaries and freedom fighters for us all.”
Gloria Steinem, the world's most distinguished feminist writer, has spent some of her early years in India. During the time when Gloria was in India, she was influenced by the Gandhian idea that change should always grow from the bottom to the top like a tree. Subsequently, from her many decades of work for feminist movements in the U.S. and around the world, she learned that violence and domination have been normalized under the guise of the false division of human beings as doers and agents, rulers and rulers, 'men' and 'women'. In 'Wajood Woman Ka', Gloria Steinem and activist Ruchira Gupta have teamed up to create a select collection of some of Gloria's unprecedented essays. These are the essays that, since their writing, reached around the world, unmindful of boundaries and laid the foundations for a large part of modern feminist ideas. In these pages, Gloria has exposed the truth that racial and race and class-based discriminations have taken root through control over the female body—Gloria also explains how men and women are fighting for this control. She brilliantly analyzes Adolf Hitler's craze for masculinity and finds the gendered idea of violence emerging, taking root in his personality. She has explained the difference between erotica literature (erotica) and pornography and clarified that this difference arises because of the inequality governing the relationship between the two sexes. Apart from her poignant experience of a few days spent as a playboy bunny, the book also includes an hitherto unpublished essay 'The Third Way' written by Gloria on human trafficking and the flesh trade. This book has been written in such a way that even the complex debates present in it are easily understood by the reader due to the touch of ease. In this collection you will find new ideas, anger, seriousness and laughter and a friend, everything.
