Habile politique, meneur d'hommes écouté, Geoffroy de Villehardouin a joué un rôle important tout au long de la quatrième croisade, de 1200 à 1207, surtout au début (ambassade de Venise, choix de Boniface de Montferrat comme chef de l'armée) et à la fin, après la seconde prise de Constantinople. Ce fut, au sens médiéval du terme, un prudhomme qui, dans un monde tenté par l'individualisme - c'est le temps du chevalier errant-, a constamment recherché l'unité contre toutes les forces de dissolution.Sa sobre grandeur, son absence de complaisance envers soi-même, son refus de s'exhiber et sa discrétion forcent le respect et l'admiration, même s'il arrive que son récit soit tendancieux et défende les choix des grands. Comme l'a écrit Sainte-Beuve, "jusqu'à la fin sur la brèche, il porte intrépidement l'épée, il tient simplement la plume ; c'est assez pour offrir à jamais, dans la série des historiens hommes d'action où il s'est placé, un des types les plus honorables et des plus complets de son temps".

This first-hand account of the noble, barbaric Fourth Crusade was written by Geoffroy de Villehardouin, a French nobleman who played a leading role in the war. The First, Second, and Third Crusades were an effort by Christians to free the Holy Land from the Turks, but the Fourth Crusade degenerated into a war of conquest amongst fellow Christians. Villehardouin's account provides important insights into the motivations of the crusaders in this most famous of campaigns, launched at the dawn of the 13th century.
