It is said that his world-view was clear-eyed and urbane, and that he neither condemned human conduct nor sentimentally celebrated it. Born in Paris on the Rue des Petits Champs, at a time when the royal court was vacillating between aiding the nobility and threatening it, he was considered an exemplar of the accomplished 17th-century nobleman. Until 1650, he bore the title of Prince de Marcillac.
Excerpt from MaximsThe family of La Rochefoucauld is one of the most ancient and illustrious in France. Its founder, according to Andrew Du Chesne, was one Foucauld, or Fulk, a cadet, as is supposed, of the house of Lusignan, or Lezignem, and connected with the ancient Dukes of Guienne, who appears, about the period A. D. 1000, as Seigneur, or Lord, of the Town of La Roche in the Angoumois. He is described in contemporary charters as Vir nobilissimus Fulcaldus, and his renown seems to have been sufficiently extensive to confer his name on La Roche, which has ever since borne, and bestowed on his descendants, the distinctive appellation of La Roche Foucauld. Guy, the eighth Seigneur de la Roche Foucauld, is mentioned by Froissart as having per formed, ih the year 1380, a celebrated tilt in the lists at Bordeaux, whither he came, attended by 200 of his kins men and connections.
The philosophy of La Rochefoucauld, which influenced intellectuals as diverse as Voltaire, Nietzsche and the Jansenists, is captured here in more than 600 penetrating and pithy aphorisms.

"As Rochefoucauld his maxims drew From Nature - I believe them true. They argue no corrupted mind In him; the fault is in mankind."- Swift."Maxims are the condensed good sense of nations."- Sir J. Mackintosh.
“Maxims and Reflections” is a collection of wisdom and advice by Francois Duc de La Rochefoucauld, a noted French aristocrat, soldier and author. La Rochefoucauld was born in 1613 in Paris to a wealthy family and was well-educated in the traditional aristocratic studies of the time, which included military history, court etiquette, hunting, proper dress, comportment, and world relations. He took an active interest in public and political issues at a young age and was well-known during his life for his bravery in military campaigns and for his involvement in sophisticated literary circles. In 1665, he published the first volume of his “Maxims” anonymously. These brief and eloquent words of wisdom and advice were quite popular when they first appeared. La Rochefoucauld went on to add and expand on the “Maxims” and published new editions several times throughout his life. The maxims and reflections compiled together in this edition touch on many aspects of life, including love, passion, politics, pride, vanity, sincerity, and the countless quirks of human nature. La Rochefoucauld’s observations are clever and astute and remain as thought-provoking and insightful as when they were first written. This edition follows the translations of J. W. Willis Bund and J. Hain Friswell.

Of all the French epigrammatic writers, La Rochefoucauld (1613-1680) is at once the most widely known and the most distinguished. Voltaire “One of the works that most largely contributed to form the taste of the [French] nation, and to diffuse a spirit of justice and precision, is the collection of maxims by François, duc de La Rochefoucauld; though there is scarcely more than one truth running through the book—that ‘self-love is the motive of everything’—yet, this thought is presented under so many varied aspects that it is nearly always striking.” And Lord Chesterfield, in his letters to his “Till you come to know mankind by your own experience, I know no thing nor no man that can in the meantime bring you so well acquainted with them as La his little book of Maxims, which I would advise you to look into, for some moments at least, every day of your life, is, I fear, too like and too exact a picture of human nature. I own it seems to degrade it, but yet my experience does not convince me that it degrades it unjustly.”The Maxims were first published in 1665, under the title Reflections or sentences and moral maxims; and the edition of 1678, the fifth, from which the text has been used for the present translation, was the last revised by the author and published in his lifetime (with maxims numbered 1 to 504). Maxims which appeared in previous editions and were suppressed by La Rochefoucauld can be found in the second part, entitled “Maxims withdrawn by the author”, here numbered 505 to 583.The French original of this bilingual edition was reviewed by Philippe Renaud. The English translation, originally by John William Willis-Bund and James Hain Friswell, has been thoroughly revised by Rebecca Hazell and Philippe Renaud.

Europe's greatest aphorist, here in a new edition from Rogue Scholar Press with a Foreword by Mart and Introduction by JL De L'Enclos“accurately aimed arrows, which hit the mark again and again, the black mark of man’s nature” - Nietzsche"Moderation cannot claim the merit of opposing and overcoming they are never found together. Moderation is the languor and sloth of the soul, Ambition its activity and heat.""No one should be praised for his goodness if he has not strength enough to be wicked. All other goodness is but too often an idleness or powerlessness of will.""Weak persons cannot be sincere."“La Rochefoucauld is not seeking with the Maximes to raise man to the attainment of a higher condition. But nor is he an amoralist or moral anarchist, instructing followers to abandon virtue. He is the engaged spectator, the mature aristocrat who, having passed from an active life to a largely contemplative one, is able to see in others and in himself the bitter truth of man’s high moral aspirations when they confront reality.” - from the Introduction by JL De L'Enclos
