David Ricardo (1772-1823), the founder of the classical school of economics, applied the deductive logic of the philosopher James Mill to the analysis of monetary principles. His chief work, Principles of Political Economy and Taxation, first published in 1817, had a profound impact and remains one of the groundworks of modern economics. Ricardo's labor theory of value, as well as his elaboration of the division of incomes, and the function of wages, rent, and trade, deeply influenced the economic philosophies of Karl Marx, John Stuart Mill, Alfred Marshall, and many others.
David Ricardo [1772-1823] has been called ".the principle founder of what has been called the classical school of political economy" (Dictionary of National Biography) and "first 'scientific' economist" (Printing and the Mind of Man 277). Here McCulloch's authoritative Life and Writings of Mr. Ricardo prefaces this collection of Ricardo's pamphlets and other works, including his influential treatise on the distribution of wealth, The Principles of Political Economy and Taxation.
REPRINT 2007. Hardbound. Octavo. xxiv, 251. Oxford, Clarendon 1887. The letters in this collection were written between 1810 and 1823, the last ones dating only a few days before Ricardo's death. The letters are mostly devoted to discussing the many questions in political economy on which the two authors disagreed. Malthus' letters to Ricardo are lost, so we have only Ricardo's response to Malthus. The two men were personal friends, and were often in each other's company, but on economic themes they differed widely. The book is well edited and it contains much information, both in the text and in the notes, about Ricardo and Malthus themselves, and also about other political economists of the period.
Friend to, colleague of, and influence on the likes of James Mill, Jeremy Bentham, and Thomas Malthus, revolutionary British writer DAVID RICARDO (1772-1823) was one of the foundational thinkers of classical economics, developing theories of rent, wages, profits, value, and labor that continue to dramatically impact economic philosophy today. Here, in one volume, are two of his profoundly significant essays: In 1810's "The High Price of Bullion" Ricardo calls for the adoption of a metallic currency. And "An Essay on Profits," from 1815, contains Ricardo's arguments against protectionism in Britain's national policy, and was instrumental in the eventual defeat of the country's tariffs on agricultural products. ____________________________________ ALSO FROM COSIMO: Ricardo's Principles of Political Economy and Taxation

Part of an eleven-volume set which contains all of Ricardo's published and unpublished writings, and provides great insight into the early era of political economics.
The book has an active table of contents for easy access to each chapter.David Ricardo made essential contributions to classical economics and has been called the most influential classical economist along with Adam Smith, Thomas Malthus, and John Stuart Mill.Malthus founded the population theory of classic economics. He said that population will increase in an exponential way. On the other hand, food supply can only increase to a certain point due to the limitation of land productivity and other factors. Are Malthus's ideas totally irrelevant today? Not at all. The fact remains that the world population keeps increasing, and will keep increasing. What is the solution? From their first meeting in 1811, there was little of that in political economy Malthus and Ricardo agreed on.Regarding the Corn Law in 1815, Ricardo and Malthus were on opposite sides of the free-trade issue. Ricardo viewed rent as a socially unnecessary payment at the expense of profits and therefore argued vigorously in favor of free trade. However, Malthus argued that higher corn prices were in the interests of the workers since the workers' purchasing power was closely tied to the price of corn. Malthus took the opposite stand and argued in favor of the Corn Law.Malthus and Ricardo also disagreed on economic method. Ricardo treated costs as the determinant of value where a single variable, labor, became the only significant one. Malthus insisted on incorporating Ricardo's cost analysis into a supply-and-demand framework. Malthus’s approach to address value question was two aspects. The first was an explanation of exchange value; the second, an explanation of the measure of value. In addition to the disagreements, Ricardo and Malthus do share the same view about population. Ricardo also said the same thing about the population as Malthus that population kept expanding, eventually there was not enough food to go around, and economic growth would stop. Together they led to economics being called "the dismal science."Ricardo’s work also influenced Henry George, one of the great American economists. Henry George pioneered property tax concept through his book Progress and Poverty and influenced the profits of millions of American people. This is a must-read book for people who are also interested in the deepest thoughts and views about Malthus theories and the core economic subjects such as value, profit, wages, and prices by David Ricardo, one of the greatest thinkers on the planet.
David Ricardo (1772 - 1823) was a hugely influential British political economist and stock trader. This volume, first published in 1923, contains five important pamphlets published by him, edited and with an overarching introductory essay by E. C. K. Gonner. Each essay relates either to monetary and financial subjects - including the high price of Bullion, monetary theory and the position of the Bank of England - or to the agricultural conditions of Britain and proposed solutions to the problems discussed. This is a fascinating and detailed work, which will be of great value to those with an interest in Ricardo's theories and British economic history.

Using the essay The High Price of Bullion, he laid out the theoretical foundation of the repeal of the Bank Restriction Act of England.Ricardo’s first pamphlet, The High Price of Bullion a Proof of the Depreciation of Bank Notes, was published in 1810. During The French Wars from 1792 to 1815, Bank of England printed too much paper money and caused inflation in England. In the essay Plan for the Establishment of a National Bank, he argued in favour of a metallic currency. Ricardo further told Bank of England in the essay that inflation also affected foreign exchange rates and the flow of gold. The Essay in this book is the important thoughts and discussions by David Ricardo on the roles, operations, and scope of a central bank. This is a must-read book for people who are also interested in the deepest thoughts and views about the core monetary subjects such as the roles of a central bank and stabilization of a momentary system by David Ricardo, one of the greatest thinkers on the planet.

David Ricardo was born in London in 1772. His father, a successful stockbroker, introduced him to the Stock Exchange at the formative age of fourteen. During his career in finance, he amassed a personal fortune which allowed him to retire at the age of forty-two. Thereafter, he pursued a political career and further developed his economic ideas and policy proposals. A man of very little formal education, Ricardo arguably became, with the exception of Adam Smith, the most influential political economist of all time. Ricardo was the first economist to make extensive use of deductive reasoning and arithmetical models to illustrate the anticipated reactions to juxtaposed market forces and responsive human action. His modes of analysis have become identified with economics as an academic discipline. Like Smith, Ricardo believed that minimal government intervention best served an economy. His contributions to economics are numerous and include the theory of “hard money” to hedge inflation, the law of diminishing returns, developed along with his close friend the classical economist T. R. Malthus, and the labor theory of value. One of Ricardo’s most significant contributions to economics is the law of comparative advantage as applied to international commerce, which grew out of Adam Smith’s division of labor and has become the central argument for free trade and open markets.

I believe the contrary to be the fact, for I find that the amount of notes of five pounds and above, which have been in circulation for several years past, in the month of February is as £. 1815--16,394,359 1816--15,307,228 1817--17,53S,656 1818--19,077,951 1819--16,14S,098 1830--15,393,770 1821--15,766,270 1S22--15,784,770 And as the notes of five pounds and upwards have not increased 400,000/. since 1820, I find it impossible to believe that the circulation of a smaller denomination can have increased in any much larger Before I conclude this section I must observe that the complaints made against the Bank for refusing to lend money on discount at four per cent. are without any good foundation. The reason for such complaints is, that by lending at four per cent. they would lower the rate of interest generally, and the landed interest would be benefited by being able to raise money on mortgage on cheaper terms than they now pay for it. I believe, however, that no amount of loans which the Bank might make, and no degree of lowness of interest at which they might choose to lend, would alter the permanent rate of interest in the market. Interest is regulated chiefly by the profits that may be made by the use of capital, it...
