A bold and sensible new behavioral approach to dieting—driven by economic principles— that recommends micro-habits and meta-rules to help control impulses to overeat, approach food in a healthier way, and lose weight once and for all.Christopher Payne and Rob Barnett are two formerly obese economists who met while working at Bloomberg. They faced the same problems that so many others face long hours, frequently eating out for lunch and dinner, and snacking out of boredom. When they finally lost weight by applying what they know best—economics—to their waistlines. By carefully considering economic theories, real-world data, and their own personal experiences, they developed behavioral best practices that helped them control their impulses to overeat and approach food in a healthier way.Full of Barnett and Payne’s personal weight-loss stories, The Economists' Diet is a practical guide that explains how to control those ever-present impulses to overeat and, in the process, lose weight and keep it off. It is “[a] uniquely themed and user-friendly guide” ( Publisher’s Weekly ), and “full of advice [that] makes a lot of sense and is habit-forming (Charles Duhigg, bestselling author of The Power of Habit ).

Are you caught between two worlds? In one, you live a life of data, logic, and elegant code. You are a scientist, an engineer, a programmer, or an analyst. You build systems, you trust evidence, and you solve problems. In the other, you see the profound peace and resilient community that faith brings to people you love and respect. You may have even felt a "God-shaped hole" in your own life, a persistent search for purpose that logic alone can't seem to fill.If you are intellectually honest, you can’t accept dogmatic answers. You’ve read the New Atheists or watched the debates, and you find the critiques of organized religion compelling. You are likely one of the millions who identify as "spiritual but not religious" , yet you are left What now? How do you reconcile your respect for science with the undeniable human need for meaning? This internal conflict has just become the most urgent question of our time. You are standing at the epicenter of the greatest disruption in human the dawn of Artificial Intelligence. We are building machines that directly compete with religion's traditional domains—providing answers, solving problems, and even offering a form of nonbiological immortality. As AI becomes the new "god in the machine" , a super-intelligence that promises to eliminate all mystery, what happens to the human spirit? Will awe, wonder, and even our own sense of purpose be declared obsolete? The Meaning Algorithm argues the exact opposite. This is the book for the curious, the skeptical, and the analytically minded who refuse to choose between faith and reason. This isn't a book about conversion. It's about comprehension.Forget the idea of "science vs. spirit." This book deconstructs religion as the most enduring and effective human technology ever invented—an evolving operating system designed to optimize for cooperation, resilience, and happiness. It is an engineer's guide to the human spiritual machine, reverse-engineering the code that has successfully run our species for millennia. This journey provides a powerful new lens on our world Deconstructing the "Hardware": We’ll explore the cognitive science of belief, examining the evolutionary "bugs" and "features"—like the Hypersensitive Agency Detection Device (HADD)—that hardwired your brain for faith long before science existed. Analyzing the "Source Code": We'll trace the "hard forks" of ancient faiths, from the split of Pauline Christianity to the emergence of Islam's "final patch" and the contrasting "operating system" of Buddhism. Investigating the We'll present the powerful, data-driven case for the benefits of spiritual practice, from Dr. Lisa Miller's research showing how spirituality can physically thicken the brain's cortex as a defense against depression to Dr. Andrew Newberg's brain scans of meditating monks and nuns. Scanning the We'll confront the AI challenge head-on, arguing that mass automation will create a "meaning vacuum" that these ancient "social technologies" are uniquely positioned to fill. The Meaning Algorithm is your new framework. It delivers a practical, non-dogmatic toolkit for engineering a life of purpose.

Born in 1990, Christopher grew up without any inclining of artistic capabilities until the age of 18 where he, while traveling in the United States was captivated by photographing another culture, very similar to that he had grown up in but still completely different at the same time. It was culture shock and armed with a simple DSLR he took his first foray into image making. Focusing on the people of the small farming community he was staying in he created his first project and from this, he endeavored to learn more about photography enrolling in night courses while developing his primary practice and slowly taking it more seriously. It was after this time at the age of 22 where Christopher took his first serious steps into photography. Having worked previously on a project of street photography throughout the United Kingdom, he was selected by a panel of judges to be exhibited at the prestigious Brighton Photo Fringe Biennal. From this, he would further develop his practice with the ultimate consideration of becoming a professional photographer. Enrolling in the degree program at Southampton Solent University Christopher quickly established his developing practice and used his time there to develop further and hone his abilities. Creating further bodies of workcalled Advertendo, Subconscious Appearance and for his final major project this piece, An Autumn Sunset. • British Furniture 1820 to 1920 - The Luxury Market is the major work in its field, a stunning achievement and a landmark publication • The first book to properly assess the work of British Furniture makers through the 19th century, among them great names such as Gillows, Maples, Hollands and Morris & Co • In over 600 pages, all lavishly illustrated, the author creates the new and definitive work on this subject • Christopher Payne, a former director of Sotheby's, is an independent furniture historian and well-known author who has appeared on the BBC Antiques Roadshow - for over 30 years British Furniture 1820 to 1920: The Luxury Market, written by celebrated furniture historian Christopher Payne and including over 1,000 superb photographs, is a landmark publication and the first book to comprehensively assess British furniture design from the early origins of the so-called Victorian era through the myriad of influences in vogue up to the 1920s. It goes further than any book has attempted before, creating a continuum to underline the importance of the late Recency style favoured by George IV, moving through to the first two decades of the twentieth century, with a host of ever-changing styles and fashions. Payne studies the influence of the exhibition era, trade catalogues, retailers and subcontractors, and sheds light on the often-unidentified makers of reproduction furniture that later became an important part of the market. He also illustrates the importance of the revival styles, a fundamental part of the furniture trade that has often previously been ignored and shines the light on makers and suppliers of the popular Rococo Revival, ‘Queen Anne' and ‘Chippendale' styles. Some of the makers' names are familiar to furniture collectors, such as Collinson & Lock, Edwards & Roberts, Gillow, Holland, Maples and Morris & Co., but many are less so and their work is explained and presented here for the first time.

Charlotte Nixon Payne was a fascinating, committed, and passionate woman. Born in 1879 to a Victorian family, she strove for the things she deeply cared Pacifism, Women's rights, Children's wellbeing. She hated war propaganda which glorified death and destruction. She pleaded for wartime Truth, which she always spelled with a capital T. Without much formal education, Charlotte was innately smart, writing through wars, depression, family tragedy and financial hardship. Her love life was passionate but unrequited. She admired talented men, especially for musical and literary ability. She loved repartee and meaningful conversation. She sought to better her station in life with a good marriage. Her first meaningful affair recalled as her essay, Minor Key, described her relationship with a dying man in Switzerland. After he died, she promptly married Meyrick Whitmore Payne, with whom she soon had her first child. Her husband served as a Lieutenant Colonel in WW I and with the nominal rank of Brigadier in the Ministry of Food during WW Il. He had difficulty with her prominent pacifism and eventually left her on the day of her daughter's marriage. He was never again mentioned in her diary, even though they had lovingly written many songs and poems together before separation. Charlotte wrote a short story, Kindred Soul, about a couple of frustrated wives who go looking for European adventure. There is no proof that this story is about her, but in the spirit of Minor Key, it is likely. Charlotte lost what remained of her family wealth in the 1917 Russian revolution. From that moment on, she struggled with finances.

• At the core of this book is a survey of over one hundred Paris-based firms, amongst which Sormani, Baguès, Barbedienne, Christofle, Lièvre, Viardot, Dasson, Grohé, Sauvrezy, Fourdinois, Beurdeley and Linke • The author lifts the veil on lesser-known makers such as Mazaroz and Ternisien et Dantant, and reveals important new discoveries about firms that have been all but forgotten for the last century • Draws on the author's extensive knowledge of nineteenth-century furniture to describe each maker's particular style and elucidate any characteristic techniques or materials that may help with an understanding of the work and future attribution •Includes an innovative chapter that analyzes the background of the high quality copies of Ancien Régime furniture made by the upper echelon of the Paris luxury trade, bringing this important social and cultural development into the limelight for the first time Despite the upheavals of the first decades of the nineteenth century, Paris soon recovered its position as a leading center for furniture and design in Europe, a position that was to grow and strengthen as the century progressed. Encouraged by royal and imperial regimes, exhibited at the great international fairs, and collected by international aristocrats, bankers and newly wealthy industrialists, Paris furniture by the second half of the century had once again become synonymous with luxury and exquisite craftsmanship. Furniture makers drew their inspiration from a vast array of historical periods and cultural sources to create new and exciting designs that both appealed to the eclectic tastes of the nineteenth-century amateur and yet suited the demands for comfort and convenience of the luxury consumer. Building on the generations of skills and techniques that had characterized French furniture during the years of the Ancient Régime, contemporary makers exploited technological advances and new materials to produce some of the most creative and inventive pieces ever made, often surpassing the quality achieved by previous generations.

This book is an investigation into the economic policy formulation and practice of neoliberalism in Britain from the 1950s through to the financial crisis and economic downturn that began in 2007-8. It demonstrates that influential economists, such as F.A. Hayek and Milton Friedman, authors at key British think tanks such as the Institute of Economic Affairs and the Centre for Policy Studies, and important political figures of the Thatcher and New Labour governments shared a similar conception of the consumer. For neoliberals, the idea that consumers were weak in the face of businesses and large corporations was almost offensive. Instead, consumers were imagined to be sovereign agents in the economy, whose consumption decisions played a central role in the construction of their human capital and in the enabling of their aspirations. Consumption, just like production, came to be viewed as an enterprising and entrepreneurial activity. Consequently, from the early 1980s until the present day, it was felt necessary that banks should have the freedom to meet the borrowing needs of consumers. Credit rationing would be a thing of the past. Just like businesses, consumers and households could use debt to expand their stock of personal assets. By utilizing the method of French philosopher Michel Foucault this book provides an original analysis of the policy ideas and political speeches of key figures in the New Right, in government and at the Bank of England. And it addresses the key question as to why policy-makers both in Britain and the United States did little or nothing to stem rising consumer and household indebtedness, instead always choosing to see increasing house prices and homeownership as a positive to be encouraged.
