Brenda Ueland was a journalist, editor, freelance writer, and teacher of writing. She is best known for her book If You Want to Write: A Book about Art, Independence and Spirit. Ueland was born to Andreas and Clara Hampson Ueland; the third of seven children. She attended Wells and Barnard colleges and received her baccalaureate from Barnard in 1913. She lived in and around New York City for much of her adult life before returning to Minnesota in 1930. Ueland was raised in a relatively progressive household; her father, an immigrant from Norway, was a prominent lawyer and judge. Her mother was a suffragette and served as the first president of the Minnesota League of Women Voters. Ueland would spend her life as a staunch feminist and is said to have lived by two rules: To tell the truth, and to not do anything she didn't want to.

In her 93 remarkable years, Brenda Ueland published six million words. She said she had two rules she followed absolutely: to tell the truth, and not to do anything she didn't want to do. Her integrity shines throughout If You Want to Write, her best-selling classic on the process of writing that has already inspired thousands to find their own creative center. Carl Sandburg called this book "The best book ever written about how to write." Yet Ueland reminds us that "Whenever I say 'writing' in this book, I also mean anything that you love and want to do or to make." Ueland's writing and her teaching are made compelling by her feisty spirit of independence and joy.
Brenda Ueland's own passionate coming-of-age story set in Minneapolis and Greenwich Village is the focus of this classic autobiography, first published in 1939. "She writes with spontaneous, confident zeal."-- New York Times "It is her masterpiece."--Patricia Hampl
Passionate and iconoclastic, these 80 articles and essays represent Ueland's entirely original view of the moral, social, and political issues of Midwestern, and American life. "Her personality leaps off the page in all its quirky intensity."-- Wilson Library Bulletin
The second in Kore Press' essay series was printed in an edition of 1000. Excerpt from "Tell Me " We should all know this listening, not talking, is the gifted and great role, and the imaginative role. And the true listener is much more beloved, magnetic than the talker, and he is more effective, and learns more and does more good. And so try listening.
Brenda Ueland tells the story of her mother, Clara, who was deeply involved in the civic life of the Twin Cities and in the efforts of women to gain the right to vote. The book exudes the charm of an earlier time, when people rode carriages downtown.

Ueland's approach is based on the idea that everyone has the ability to write and be creative, and that the key to unlocking this potential is to let go of fear and self-doubt, and to embrace the joy and spontaneity of the creative process. She emphasizes the importance of writing for oneself, rather than for an audience or for external validation, and encourages writers to be honest, authentic, and true to themselves.Throughout the book, Ueland provides practical advice and exercises for writers, as well as examples from her own life and experience as a writer. She also draws on the work of other writers, artists, and thinkers to illustrate her ideas and insights about creativity and writing.
