In Shakespeare's Henry V the French lords quail at the thought of British soldiers, who eat like wolves and fight like devils after 'great meals of beef'. Two centuries later, eighteenth-century England rings to boisterous renderings of 'The Roast Beef of Old England' and loud cries of 'Beef and Liberty'. And even today, in the Telegraph in June 2002, a farmer blames the French defeat in the World Cup on their ban on British beef. Eating meat rich with blood recalls ancient beliefs that it endows power, life and passion. It is a manly food, fit for fighting men: in the Napoleonic wars the British navy gave its sailors a staggering 208 pounds of beef a year. But why are so many beefy images linked to British 'freedom'. In this sparkling, provocative book Ben Rogers follows a linked set of icons - roast beef and John Bull, bull dogs and butchers -showing how the bull came to define plain, stubborn, Protestant Englishness against corrupt, effeminate, Catholic Europe. His tale is rich in vivid historical detail; from the use of the roasting jack and the outcries against French fricassees to the famous 'Durham Ox' which toured Britain in 1802, and the Sublime Society of Beefsteaks (exclusively male), which still meets in London today. Lively, funny and illuminating, illustrated throughout with prints and drawings, including famous works by Hogarth and Gillray, Beef and Liberty is a feast to relish, an entirely original history, and a pioneering study in a new subject - food nationalism.
A. J. Ayer (1910-1989) was a man of startling complexity: an exceptionally rigorous and penetrating philosopher, he was also a dedicated hedonist and seducer. He traveled in the most glamorous social circles, yet his friends found him oddly remote. Internationally acclaimed author Ben Rogers brings the brilliant, strangely vulnerable author of the classic Language, Truth, and Logic to vivid life, along with the Oxford intellectual world where he met Isaiah Berlin, Ludwig Wittgenstein, and many other great thinkers and writers of the era. Colorful, intimate, and often poignant, this is a powerful biography of a provocative and unforgettable man whose ideas changed the landscape of Western thought. "Beautifully written, sympathetic, and sensitive ... [a] balanced and rounded picture of a very complicated man." -- Simon Blackburn, The New Republic "A readable and well-researched account of the life and career of a remarkable figure." -- Lynwood Abram, Houston Chronicle "A.J. Ayer lived a fascinating life and in Rogers he has found an ideal biographer....." -- Frank McLynn, The New Statesman "Rogers succeeds in capturing the spirit of a philosophical maverick who many loved to hate." -- Kirkus Reviews "Exceptionally good ... A.J. Ayer weaves the philosophical, public, and private strands of Ayer's life together most skillfully." -- The Economist

Is there someone in your life who often seems to show flashes of creative brilliance but never seems to share it? Perhaps it is a child spending a great deal of time in a fantasy world, or a friend with a vibrant online personality but a quiet public persona. It could also be a fellow student or coworker who hides away behind cubicle walls or an internet connection. Others have a cryptic spouse or partner living behind a veil of secrecy. Do you find yourself scratching your head when this person suddenly withdraws without any apparent rhyme or reason? If so, you may be encountering the Dostoevsky Type, or INFJ in Myers–Briggs terminology. In this book, you will come to understand what makes an INFJ tick, what informs their visions, why they guard their thoughts so tightly and why they pull away. With this understanding, you will be able to help create an environment where vast potential is unlocked, provide the creative space needed to grow together, and develop an authentic relationship with someone who is quietly waiting and eager to share their gifts with you and the world.

This short story was originally published in Arroyo Literary Review, Volume 6, in Spring 2014 and later nominated by the editors of that journal for the Pushcart Prize. It was also excerpted in Mark Curtis' beautiful coffee table book, ONE OF A KIND, a collection of unique personal stories and incredible photos by northern Nevadans past and present. The structure and theme of the story draw inspiration from Hemingway's timeless story, The Old Man and the Sea, and the drama takes place on the fabled Geiger Grade highway between Reno and Virginia City. The protagonist is a young professional cyclist, learning the cost of his pursuit of greatness.

Alice's Return is Ben Rogers´s new bestseller. His writing is very poetry, delightful and has won the hearts of young people and adults with its incredible reflections and adventures. You reflect with wisdom, laugh at things you had never thought about and are truly moved. Dare to enter the Kingdom of Hearts and let the young Alice captivate you again. In this work, Ben Rogers gets inspiration to take much of the richness of the universal classic Alice in Wonderland, and is based upon the magical and fantastic realism, so that the unreal world merges with the real world. Alice, the main protagonist of the narrative, revives the most outlandish adventures. In this wonderful universe, the characters she meets are personified animals, human-like objects, cards with heads, hands and legs, they are all fantastic creatures that will provide the reader an excellent and enjoyable journey into the world of imagination.* * * Years later, I was still able to evoke all the fantasy I had lived as if it had happened a few days ago. Fondly, Alice chose a place to go deep into her thoughts. By simply closing her eyes she lingered at the table of the March Hare. Like a lover, she smelled the scent of the environment. By only imagining, she slid her little fingers onto the table. She pressed the cups and silverware against her hand, in a sense which is expected to feel them even hear them:- There´s no room! There´s no room! She simply smiled. She smiled like a lover who chooses one of its most stunning flashbacks of love to remember. She smiled while longing for it, for its splendor ... Majesty! Longing that lasts. Well, if you do not understand that, never mind .

The poems of Mackerel Salad lure the reader into a series of disorientating situations which explore unreliable maps, being lost, trying to hide, and the nature of exploration itself. We travel through space, across seas, into a medieval medina, inside a disquieting hostel kitchen in outback Australia, and round and round and round a convoluted traffic junction in Brighton. All the while, the world won’t stop moving, routine and ritual cannot be relied upon, even names are wearing out, and today is the last day of the salad.
