Anthony de Mello was a Jesuit priest and psychotherapist who became widely known for his books on spirituality. An internationally acclaimed spiritual guide, writer and public speaker, de Mello hosted many spiritual conferences. The few talks which he allowed to be filmed, such as "A Rediscovery of Life" and "A Way to God for Today," have inspired many viewers and audiences throughout the United States, Canada, and Central America. De Mello established a prayer center in India. He died suddenly in 1987. His works are readily available and additional writings were published after his death. In 1998, some of his opinions were condemned by the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, who later became Pope Benedict XVI, wrote for the Congregation: "But already in certain passages in [his] early works and to a greater degree in his later publications, one notices a progressive distancing from the essential contents of the Christian faith. ... With the present Notification, in order to protect the good of the Christian faithful, this Congregation declares that the above-mentioned positions are incompatible with the Catholic faith and can cause grave harm." Some editions of his books have since been supplemented with the insertion of a caution: "The books of Father Anthony de Mello were written in a multi-religious context to help the followers of other religions, agnostics and atheists in their spiritual search, and they were not intended by the author as manuals of instruction of the Catholic faithful in Christian doctrine or dogma."

The heart of Anthony de Mello's bestselling spiritual message is awareness. Mixing Christian spirituality, Buddhist parables, Hindu breathing exercises, and psychological insight, de Mello's words of hope come together in Awareness in a grand synthesis. In short chapters for reading in quiet moments at home or at the office, he cajoles and challenges: We must leave this go-go-go world of illusion and become aware. And this only happens, he insists, by becoming alive to the needs and potential of others, whether at home or in the workplace. Here, then, is a masterful book of the spirit, challenging us to wake up in every aspect of our lives.

From the international bestselling author of Awareness, a pocket-sized guide that will bring you to new levels of spiritual awareness. The Way To Love contains the final flowering of Anthony de Mello's thought, and in it he grapples with the ultimate question of love. In thirty-one meditations, he implores his readers with his usual pithiness to break through illusion, the great obstacle to love. "Love springs from awareness," de Mello insists, saying that it is only when we see others as they are that we can begin to really love. But not only must we seek to see others with clarity, we must examine ourselves without misconception. The task, however, is not easy. "The most painful act," de Mello says, "is the act of seeing. But in that act of seeing that love is born." Anthony De Mello was the director of the Sadhana Institute of Pastoral Counseling in Poona, India, and authored several books. The Way To Love is his last.

Take a look around and see if you can find just one completely happy person, someone at peace with themselves, someone who is fearless and free from insecurity, depression, lack, and worry. You would be lucky if you found one in a hundred thousand. The irony is we were born happy; we lost touch with it. We were born surrounded by a divinity of peace, joy, and love; we lost sight of it. It's as if we've been hypnotized to see what is not there and not see what is there. We were brainwashed by society into building our life on the unquestioned belief that without money, power, success, approval, romance, etc., we cannot be happy. It's a false belief that has us constantly striving, constantly focused on what we don't have, constantly at the mercy of things and people as we try desperately to make life conform to society's formula for happiness, only to discover it offers nothing more in the way of a happy life than temporary respites from the fear of failing. Suppose there is a way of waking up from all that, where what is false and neurotic within you would drop with little or no effort on your part and your eyes would open to the reality of joy surrounding you. Here it Stop Fixing Yourself, the new book by Anthony DeMello that helps you rediscover the life you were meant to live.

Christian Exercises in Eastern FormTruly a one-of-a-kind, how-to-do-it book, this small volume responds to a very real hunger for self-awareness and holistic living. In forty-seven exercises that teach things such as awareness of physical sensations, stillness, healing of hurtful memories, and consciousness of self and world, de Mello succeeds in helping all who have ever experienced prayer as difficult, dull, or frustrating. The essential key, he notes, is to journey beyond mere thought-forms and discover satisfying new depths in prayer from the heart . This allows for a greater sense of awareness amid silence, and disposes the one who prays to untold riches, spiritual fulfillment, and ultimately, a mystical experience of God-centeredness. Drawing on Scripture, as well as insights from Eastern and Western spiritual masters, the author has a unique appeal that transcends time, culture, and religious background. For many years a bestseller in the English language, Sadhana has now been translated into more than two dozen foreign languages.

"Both what you run from -- and what you yearn for -- are within you." --Anthony de Mello, S.J.In the tradition of his bestselling Song of the Bird, de Mello has written these story meditations as stepping stones toward a spiritual life based on self-knowledge and understanding. This book contains over 250 stories, grouped under the themes of Prayer, Awareness, Religion, Grace, "Saints," Self, Love, and Truth. Although derived from a variety of countries and cultures, these tales share the spiritual heritage and popular humor of the entire human race. Finally, an Anthony De Mello book designed just like the famous workshops De Mello conducted in the 1980s at Fordham University . The book's binding allows the book to open fully for the pages to lay flat, making it easy to journal and to complete the simple worksheets and exercises. The Promise Anthony (Tony) De Mello Makes: "I can promise you this," Tony said in opening his workshop. "I have not known a single person who gave time to being aware in this way who didn't see a difference in a matter of weeks. The quality of your life changes, so you don't have to take it on faith anymore. You see it; you're different. You react differently. In fact, you react less and act more. You see things you've never seen before. You're much more energetic, much more alive. You lose your fear of failure, your tensions about succeeding, you will be yourself. Relaxed. You will gaze out at the world and say, My, how different everything looks." The Breakthough into Happiness: We have all been programmed to seek happiness outside of ourselves—seized through great effort from an unpredictable world—and then to become upset and self-condemning when our effort fails to realize its promise of fulfillment, which it always fails to do. This is not to say that success isn't a reasonable pursuit, but it cannot give us happiness. Nothing of the world can. Why? Because we have it already. The happiness, peace, and love that defines fulfillment are already yours, encoded in your spiritual DNA. They are not earned or acquired. They live in you as you to be expressed through you. The only effort needed is really no effort at all; it's a matter of seeing and then dropping a set of false beliefs blocking you.A Year with Anthony De Mello is a week-by-week workshop of fifty-two passages gleamed from De Mello's workshops. It is suggested you go week by week, but you can move through the sections at whatever pace works best for you. Each week's passage is followed by a favorite parable or koan Anthony admired to illuminate the passage, and each week there are two simple but engaging exercises to actualize the week's teaching. Following each week's section is a number of lined, blank pages for journaling about your own insights during the week.
"What's so original about this many?" asked a visitor. "All he gives you is a hash of stories, proverbs, and sayings from other masters."A woman disciple smiled. She once had a cook, she said, who made the most wonderful hash in the world."How on earth do you make it, my dear? You must give me the recipe."The cook's face glowed with pride. She said, "Well, Ma'am, I'll tell beef's nothin'; pepper's nothin'; onion's nothin': but when I throws myself into the hash - that's what makes it what it is."That's what you'll find in the second part to De Mello's one minute nonsense - more one minute nonsense - an assortment of stories, proverbs, and sayings from a master thrown together with a dash of Anthony De Mello. The master referred to is no one in particular - he is a Hindu guru, a Jewish rabbi, a Zen Roshi, a Taoist sage. He is Jesus, Lao Tzu, and Socrates. The master's teaching is timeless. These anecdotes will not be easy to understand and should be read and pondered one at a time. Within the pages of more one minute nonsense you'll find wise, witty, yet puzzling responses to life's many questions.
